I haven't been able to use the Start/Stop Movie to Disk function in SL ever since I first installed it (about 9 months ago), but I never knew why. Every time I selected it in the File menu, it would just pop up the Save dialog, then... nothing.
I thought this was normal, until I read other posts on this forum about the Start/Stop Movie to Disk function, and they mentioned the ability to select which codec to use. I have NEVER seen the codec dialog; only the Save dialog. I just realized that this might be a clue to what kind of problem I'm having.
Does anyone know what it means when the Start/Stop Movie to Disk function does NOT open the codec selection dialog?

I don't even see the Save dialog window, much less the Codec dialog. Maybe I should try to uninstall/reinstall SL...

I had a similar problem awhile back... what I did was uninstalled and reinstalled QuickTime (don't think this had to do with it but just wanted to keep it uptodate with the inworld video streaming anyway), and I installed a comprehensive codec pack. For example, the K-Lite Codec Pack was just updated today. I don't know of a definitive solution for this; the SL moviemaker is not that well-documented and I'd be veering towards other solutions like FRAPS, which Alt-Zoom uses.

thanks for the link to the newest version of the k-lite codec packs
I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling my codecs... what are the names of the files that the Quicktime codecs use, just in case they give me trouble?
I recall having issues with Quicktime before, this is just the first time it might have stopped a dialogue box from opening.

OK, something is really messed up on my system.
First, I uninstalled Quicktime and the old K-Lite pack that I had on my system, then I installed the new K-Lite Codec Pack 2.69 FULL, and uninstalled every codec that it wanted me to uninstall.
I didn't see any options for installing Quicktime in the installer's menus, so I assumed it was being installed automatically.
One complete installation and reboot later, I try to test the new Quicktime codecs by opening a Quicktime movie in Windows Media Player.
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file could not be found."
WHAT??
So now I have a bunch of updated codecs... and no Quicktime.
I went to Apple's site and tried to download the newest version of the official QT codecs... but it wants me to install iTunes, which I don't want.
Help!

Downloaded and installed the Quicktime Alternative from the same site the K-Lite Codec Pack was on. MOV files play again.
But I still can't get the codec dialog to open in the Start/Stop Movie To Disk function in SL.
