There have been a number of discussions of what the best way to spend, say, one to two thousand dollars on a computer for SL. I would be interested in seeing suggestions for a lower price bracket, say 3 to 5 hundred dollars for the box, not including a monitor.

You can find computers in that price range at WalMart. However, building it yourself will get you a better computer. Either way, in that price range, you will end up with a basic general purpose computer.
Edit: 3 weeks ago, I rescued an old Dell from a trip to the dumpster. Took it home, went into my spare parts, and bought a used processor (P3, 1ghz), 512 megs of ram, a new DVD drive/CD burner (OEM) and a PCI Nvidia GeForce 4000MX (couldn't find an AGP card small enough to fit in case). Final cost was around $250. It will run SL with all the settings turned down.

I would be interested in seeing suggestions for a lower price bracket, say 3 to 5 hundred dollars for the box, not including a monitor. I just checked the dell/gateway/hp/emachines sites and they all have pc's in that range, but they have the built-in graphics that don't play well with SL. So you will have to factor in the cost of a new card. In addition, some of them don't have modern AGP or PCI-express slots, so your only choice for a graphics card is the NVIDIA FX5200 (which works fine with SL). If you can get one of those cheap deals with 512MB of ram, you can go to CompUSA and buy the PCI graphics card for around $30-80 depending on if they are on sale.
