Folks,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 notebook. 2.0 GHZ, 1G RAM. XP-Pro-SP-2. Originally the Display adapter was shown in Device Manger as Dell 8200. After updating the driver from Device Manager, it now shows as a NVIDIA GForce4 440 Go Driver dated 7 April 04, 5.6.7.3. Properties still show 32MB RAM.

Another application (MYST IV) strongly suggested the update and things there did get a lot better. It had problems rendering smoke and haze. But now Second-Life won't start. I get a message claiming that I have a generic GDI graphics card. When I roll back to the out-dated driver, the SL problem goes away but the problems in the other application return.

Please don't make me choose between you guys. How can I fix Second Life to be happy with the latest driver.

If you have an Nvidia chipset you could try the official Nvidia drivers themselves.

Thanks Lorn but that's how all the trouble started. When I clicked update driver in the Device Manager, I was sent to the NVIDIA site and followed instructions. As I said, the new driver from NVIDIA greatly improved MYST IV but broke SL. I've repeated the Roll-Back-Update cycle a few times with the same results. So far, no response from SL support. I'll wait just a bit more.
