Slo Performance on OS X vs. Vista

I'm posting this in Technical Issues because it has to do with both Vista & OS X.

I installed Boot Camp and Vista on my new MacBook Pro w/NVIDIA 8600M GT.

On the Windows client, I get nearly *double* if not *tripple* the frame rates as on the Mac client! What's more, the Avatar Vertex Program is not grayed out, either. (In the Mac client, it's grayed out, in the windows client, it's not.) In other words, the Windows side not only performs better, but has all the best graphics features as well, whereas the Mac side often gets very choppy and laggy at the same (or lesser) settings.

What does this tell us? Well, we know that the 8600M GT is one of those cards which is specifically designed to support DirectX 10 and all of Vista's features. Perhaps the drivers for Vista are just that much more advanced.

Or, the SL version for Mac is a piece of crap!

Or, OS X has something about it which inhibits the performance of games as opposed to Windows. Which I highly doubt, since it supports multi-threaded OpenGL.

So why is this happening?

I sent a bug-report to the Lindens about it. Hopefully it's just a driver issue on the Mac side, which Apple/NVIDIA will fix in the near future. But if the fault lies with Lindens, then you guys need to fix this pronto. Because who wants to have to reboot in Windows just to play SL in a manner that is not 1/2-1/4th the speed it should be.

Any Lindens care to comment?

I am no Linden.. but unlike them, I will respond.

LL don't see the importance to provide too many resources to those OS's that are not, in their eyes, mainstream.

SL doesn't support or use graphic DirectX only OpenGL.

Vista, like your Graphics Card, are better at handling DirectX than OpenGL, simply because Microsoft want to be world leaders in every arena, and DirectX is their standards.

The likes of ATI have been very slow issuing OpenGL drivers compatible with Vista and it won't surprise me, if their isn't some sort of conspiracy going on to kill off OpenGL in favour of DirectX, which puts platforms like SL on a timeline.

I don't like the idea of conspiracies, but you cannot ignore the possibilities given past history of the companies involved. It would not surprise me to learn that Microsoft isn't trying to squash the Open Source and other OS's, with their 'security featured platform' scare mongering. Vista has Time Warner and HollyWood TM's stamped all over it.

I wonder how many times this holy statement will have to be repeated.

Laptops are NOT gaming machines.
You just cannot cram in the space of a laptop the computing, cooling and power supply requirements of a normal machine geared for games in the space and weight constrains of a laptop.

Look MY QUESTION IS THIS:

ON VISTA SL RUNS *GREAT*

ON MAC OS X IT RUNS *HALF AS FAST*

SO, why would it run faster on Vista ON THE SAME MACHINE?

Maybe Microsoft got hold of the Mac CPU designs and showed Steve how to run proper code? LOLOL... j/k
Or perhaps Time Warner and Holywood have spread their net to include you naughty Mac users DL their copyright material, by telling Microsoft they want Vista to run SL better on Macs, than the native OS?

I'm Jesting btw... the Mac is a good machine.
