Inconceivable LAG

I really don't understand the "recent" problem.... I am having hideous lag for the past 2 weeks now. One day i was perfect.... now the next I am in the WA or anywhere else with lots of people or textures and it takes me 20 seconds just to move forward after i think I've rendered everything. Eventually, I crash too. I get the dreaded red map even when i just putt a small 4 prim attachment on. I donno what the problem is... I haven't dl'd anything new or any pirateware. I've checked for memory eating viruses. My system is top notch and has run sl quite well in the past. All my other programs online run perfectly, as in FPS shooters, MMORPG's, RTS games, and Messengers. And yes, I've attempted to close out all programs that use bandwidth as well as any other programs that use CPU and just run SL. The problem persists. I've also tried changing the port to 1300 but that doesn't help either.

If anyone can help me... it'd be very much so appreciated. Thanks.

HAHA I forgot to mention... i spend most of my time trapped on a lag free island... making my friends angry that i haven't looked for a solution to this problem, so I'm here now begging for help.

Cleared Cache ?
10-01-2005 09:52
When is the last time you've cleared your SL Cache ?

I've found that clearing my cache every time I log has greatly improved my in game performance. When I start experiencing mega lag relogging and clearing seems to help.

*hugs*

Ash

You too? I finally threatened to mute him if he didn't come here for help. Helped him find the "Search this Forum" tab though.

(Hi Orhalla! Good luck.)

I also have been lagging horribly for the past few weeks so I deleted my cache for the one millionth time and it helped a little. Something has happened somewhere to cause all of this lag and I'm not sure where or what.

If you have any kind of firewall/internet security/Norton software, then it's likely the culprit. Second Life sets these programs off like no one's business. (We are nothing like an MMO network speaking.) See:

Recent Lag and Sim Performance Issues
10-03-2005 12:00
Without going into alot detail, I, too, have noticed a downturn in overall Statistics Bar indicators - and not just on my parcel. I have seen Stat's, particularly Sim FPS, Ping Times, and frame rates fluctuaing wildly when in the past these sims have been especially robust and stable (including mine).

Don't know what is going on at the network/grid level in LL, but reading this thread definitely indicates a general degradation of SL performance recently.

Are we being 'softened up' to accept whatever 1.7 brings? (Brings out the conspiracy theorist in me.)

Just wanted to provide my anecedotal $0.02.....

I too have been forced to hide in a safe Island sim and IM friends, I have cleaned out my computer so much revently, now my regularly crappy network even runs faster than it used too. Any help would be great, I e-mailed support but no word back from them yet.

System Specs are as follows:

Alienware System
Itel Pentium (R) 4 CPU 1.90Ghz
1.89 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400
Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100tx v4)
Creative SB Live! series(WDM)

I guess that's about everything.... I also don't use anti virus software..... so nobody send me anything bad.... I usually use spybot and stuff like that to check my pc sometimes. My sl was running fine 3 weeks ago..... and then one day.... I always get kicked out of the WA now.... and i can't go to my favorite place... Margaret Mfume's Starlight Diner. :( Avoiding her until this problem is fixed. She's like a 2nd mother.... I bet shut up or I'll get scolded. Any advice... the dusting didn't help either.

I was having probs on my sim that runs sim fps 600, my puter fps 20-30, and all very nice. Was a rock solid sim. Last week things started going wrong (4 out of 5 peeps including me crashed at the same time).

So I brought in a Linden to my sim and was informed my sim stats were fine, processor was fine. etc , HOWEVER there were some database issues that have been causing problems on the mainland. I was told , during the visit from the particular linden who was troubleshooting at the time, was it looked like the DB prob was solved.

Hopefully things should be back to normal soon. I will monitor my sim. let me know if things imrprove in the next couple days as the DB fix is brought in sim by sim or however it makes its way across the sim. think this was just a hiccup and should be over soon if not now, and it will imporve much more if what i have been told about 1.7 is accurate.

Orhalla, I had to get topugh with you when you began to have thoughts about selling off your land because of this. The Hobo Railroad is one of my favorite places and I wish your were working on things like the Katrina Relief with me instead of sitting with your head on a picnic table moping. I'm your friend not your mother and a good friend knows when you need an ear and when you need a kick in the butt. Now that you have finally listened to me and asked for help from the technical community, I hope they come through for you.

Orhalla's problem started suddenly and 2 days prior to the last upgrade. It's seems like most others here have more recent similar experiences. What's up with that? Can someone direct him to information on how to run the test on his system which provides feedback and pinpoints problems in transmission? I know I've seen it here and am having a hard time finding it for him.

There is some kind of statement concerning the recent lag problems in the 'tips' that appear whenever SL starts up. At least that's an official recognition of the problem. I can't remember what the reason for the lag was though.
