Hi, I was wondering if any sim owners out there could help me a great deal and answer this question.
A friend of mine wants to switch from a class 4 to a class 5 server,
Will there be any noticeable performance increases by switching to a Class 5? What are the main differences about this? Is it worth upgrading to it?
Thanks

I refer you to LindenLabs blog From: someone For owners of private islands that are on class 4 servers, I am afraid that we will not be offering an upgrade path at this time. The performance of a class 5 server, for most uses, is not significantly better than a class 4 machine.
Also http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/10/16/looking-forward-to-class-5/My understanding is that the new class 5 sims are designed to generate less heat and use less electricity while maintaining the same performance level. Do not believe anyone who tells you that class 5 sims are some sort of complete solution to all your lag needs. For the most part they are simply faster because all the class 5 sims are largely empty.

Its more about cost cutting

A change from AMD to Intel was ment to lower cost as well. As Elan said in this quote Don`t believe class 5 servers are the solve all for lag, along with teleporting, and or griefers, object rezzing etc......Infact the teleporting is asaberated in failures and occure more offen then in the older AMD srever cpu servers. (SP). How many time have you seen the black pop window saying "CAN`T TELEPORT" No answer No explaination Etc......... Now this is what paying all that money gets you? P2P has caused more problems and issues then teleporting from Telehubs. Would a happy middle be using both Telephubs and then just P2Palone?! Usagi

The one actual real performance increase that I have noticed is that a class 5 sim can handle exactly twice the number of the typical item scripts of a class 4 before time dilation sets in.
So class 4 == 1500 typical scripts, class 5 ==3000 before you run out of cpu and things start slowing down.
