Today is jinxed for me. First off - I'm on vacation this week. Yet I had to do stuff for work. I finally got home after a number of unfortunate events and encounters, wasting hours sitting around and waiting at some dark floor while the sun was shining outside (bureaucracy, grrrrr). I just wanted to have some food (late lunch, early dinner, whatever), watch some TV and play SL. Now guess what. Dinner tasted awful (after over one year of fast food abstinence I tried Burger King for a change), TV didn't work (they connected digital this morning, but as promised analog still worked after they were done) and SL is down too. DANGGGGG!! So what's wrong? Unable to conntect to Second Life. The system may be down. (...) Grid Status says it's offline and will open again shortly. Great. How long exactly is shortly. It's been two hours and it's way past the announced NOON till which Servers were supposed to be up again. BTW, was that NOON GMT!? They didn't specify and here on the website below it says "All times are GMT". That was over four hours ago. Or are they talking PST, cause the Grid Status and SL time are given in PST. Plus the guy who posted the announcement is from Frisco, so I'm sure he meant PST. Americans don't think about stuff like that, do they? Reminds me of NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter crash ( http://www.cnn.com/TECH/space/9909/30/mars.metric/). Anyway, so I guess SL will be down for another three and a half hours, maybe more. Oh man, what a day! -tina-

What I said

That's correct. They announced 5am to 12 Noon. The post under "Announcements" didn't say anything about "Game Time" though. However, on this website all times are in GMT (see quote at the bottom). So what time applies? I'm new to SL, this is confusing. I figured it out (rather guessed it) during writing my post, but I'm still wondering.

Hi Tina... I think that the website times are shown in your local time (and someone will leap on me if I'm wrong), whereas all SL announcements are made in PST. This means that the earliest that SL is likely to be up is 8pm BST, or GMT+1.
It is confusing, but not as confusing as it used to be when people on the SL website would use EST and PST interchangeably, as they used to when I first came in a year ago.
Assume that any official announcement is PST unless it states otherwise. It is also a good idea to browse the Linden announcement forum for information, as this sort of planned outage is usually announced there.
Don't be surprised if there is a certain settling in time later, too. Often they let people in slowly, and sometimes have to produce several updates for the update too.
best wishes Cali

Actually time is given in GMT on this website. At least for me. It is also stated clearly at the bottom of every page in this forum. [Quote: "All times are GMT. The time now is 05:50 PM."] That's where my confusion started. However, I do not live in that time zone, so it's not my local time. I'm actually in GMT+1, but since we've already switched to daylight savings time it's currently GMT+2. No wonder I'm getting confused. lol But I got it now. Thanks for the clearing up. Despite the statement below, when Lindens or anyone for that matter post(s) times, it's (usually!?) "game time", which is PST. -tina-

Tina The times listed as you stated at the bottom of your screen is for your forums settings. If you look at the top toolbar thing you can click on User CP...then Edit Options... then scroll down to Date & Time Options and change it to GMT-2 and dectect DST and you should see all the forum posts in your time.
