Hi Guys, I have 2 computers, currently only 1 of them plays SL well. This morning I've been trying to get my other one to play it and.. can't lol.. But I thought I'd post here whats happening with the hope that someone will know whats wrong.. Or at least what part of my PC is at fault.. Here we go..
I can start it up, sign in all ok. When I get in world I usually last about 30 seconds before..
Runtime Error!
Program F:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe
abnormal program termination
Pops up in a window, OK is the only option, click that and I crash to desktop.. But thats not all..
After that if I try to sign in again the sign in window have lines down the SL picture and is slightly blurry (see picture 1, sign in page).
If I sign in when the page is like that SL goes absolutely insane (see picture 2, messed up). This makes me think its something to do with my graphics but everything else runs fine and I really have no idea what I'm doing lol..
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Zap

What is your graphics card? How old is it? It might be that the memory is dying and corrupting your graphics. That's happened to me a couple of times. Is it an ATi? If it is an ATi then you might just have the wrong drivers installed?

What about heat? Is your graphics card cooled sufficiently? Does it do this immediately after bootup, or after you've been running it for 10-15 minutes? Could be corrupted drivers too. Any problems in any other 3-d game like Doom3, Halflife, Unreal Tournament? If you're running Windoze, click Start, Run, DXDiag.exe and see if everything is reported OK. edit: After looking at your pics again, I see...it's looking like it's only your av. The map looks fine, the graphics are ok, and I can't tell if the textures are correct, not knowing where you are Still, I'd do some checking on heat.

My graphics card is... NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400.. It doesn't find anything wrong with it and (as far as I know) all the drivers are up to date. I can't say how old it is as this was a friends computer before it was mine..
Its not just my av.. Textures go gaga as well.. Sky and ground textures.. Some objects go like my av is..
Theres also another level to it.. Thats about the best it can be while still going wrong, sometimes you get all the text screwing up, property lines repeating when you move..
Any other ideas?

Well, do you see similar issues in other 3d games? What else do you play?
How about in general at the Windows desktop?
Is the computer in a warm room? Does this happen when it first is powered on, or after a while?
Honestly, what you're describing is similar to what happened to my wife's PC a while back. She had a GF2 MX 400 that went bad and started doing strange things in games and on the desktop. Turns out that the heatsink had been loosened enough that it wasn't cooled properly. It died shortly after it started displaying the heat symptoms.

You might try telling SL that your video card has less memory than it does. The MX is a slightly underpowered card for SL and may be having texture memory issues. I've seen that work in the past, I don't know if it still works.

Ouch. The avatar corruption might be an Avatar Vertex Program issue (particularly on a 4mx card, which doesn't have a vertex shader engine), but the corruption and colorshifting is something I've only ever seen when my graphics card's overheating, or when my drivers are corrupted. You can disable Avatar Vertex Program in Preferences. To make sure the drivers are a-ok, try this: 1) Disable your antivirus temporarily. 2) Uninstall the "nVidia Display Drivers" in the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows Control Panel. 3) Visit http://www.nvidia.com and download and install the latest Display Driver release.

Thanks to everyone whose replying!!
I've only ever played Quake III and HalfLife on this PC but had no problems.. Oh and The Sims.. Nothing like this has ever happened though..
The computers in a pretty cold room, good old blighty weather, bare floorboards with big gaps in them, no where near a radiator hehehe..
I'll try re-installing the drivers tonight..
Thanks again!

Yeah, that's definitely a sign your video card's overheating. Is it possible for you to reposition your computer in such a way as to get more airflow in and out of it?

Zapoteth,
A quick test of a video card overheating - might work - is to remove the cover from the case and position a small fan blowing directly on the video card.
Also, if your case hasn't been cleaned out, probably a lot of dust in there...do you have pets? I have placed pieces of pantyhose over my front input case fan to catch cat hair. It's a great dust filter.

Hey Everyone, I've reinstalled the drivers and I can't make it crash hehe which is good.. The final test will be when I do crash to see if everything will go blurry again.. But it seems to have fix the thing that crashed it in the first place so it looks like corrupted drivers are likely..
I don't think its overheating because A: I'm in quite a cold room and B: It only goes gaga AFTER I've crashed the first time (it resets when I restart)...
Thanks to everyone! I'll let you know if I manage to crash it and let you know the results!

Im getting the same error, Machine is a AMD 2600+ 1.5 Gigs of RAM Had two dif vid cards with same error, GeForce FX 5700 256MB and My new GeForce 6600GT. No problems at all with HL ource, EQ2, or any other game I play. I also get the freezing window, however if i move the window position, the game comes back, this works for a while, then I get the abnormal program termination error.
