Grid attacks stopping me from trying to bring in a RL business

I'm not sure I'm posting this in the right place. If not, sorry. I work for a group of family owned mid-sized banks in Denver. The owners are wonderful people always looking for new ways to expand their presence. I would love to tell them about Second Life and have a great idea for a presence for them and other Colorado businesses in SL. I think Second Life has immense possibilities that are the wave of the future. And yet, I keep putting off mentioning it to them. Why? The horrible amount of grid attacks!

I've been a member since the beginning of this year, I joined New Years Eve. In the first months I was here, it was a long time before I even knew grid attacks were possible. Until the enrollment became so open, I think I experienced it once or twice. Now it is nearly a daily occurance. Sometimes even two or three times a day. I realize Linden Labs is trying to build the amount of members in SL. But at what cost? Quantity is rarely greater then quality. I don't wish to make SL a pay per use for everyone, but we do need some sort of verification process so we can identify and more PERMANENTLY get rid of griefers.

The bank owners love to promote Colorado businesses, but if the grid cannot be kept up and running in a more consistent fashion, they won't even attempt to look. And that, Lindens, is a damn shame. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is putting off bringing in real world business either.

Again, sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. But from all accounts the blog isn't the best idea either. And to me, not being able to run ANY business in SL due to grid attacks, is a technical issue that needs to be addressed.

You know, even if it's not the right forum to post it on (which I'm not sure one way or the other), they need to hear this.

Personally I stopped telling my friends and forums I frequent about the game because of how unstable it's been the last few months. Why should I bring people here when the game is crashing left and right from either a bad patch or another grid attack?

When I first joined I was heavily promoting how cool the place was and getting people to sign up. (I did bring a couple friends into the game, but they stopped playing because of numerous problems with the game) So in the end it makes me look bad so I stopped all together. Until they get their act together, I see no reason for me to bring in potential business for them.

I have been playing for about a year also and I used to have fun, Now nothings the same and EVERY DAY attacks occur which basically means those of us LUCKY enuff to get on surely wont be buying anything from vendors and such becasue WHAT if Lindens roll abck, I lost my stuff, oh well Ill wait till tommorrow.

tommorow comes, Repeat

I got some teasing from friends in RL about second life, showed a few people and find myself making excuses to TRY to stick up for LL but you can only do that for so long, now Im back in ridicule in my RL friends eyes who cannot believe I pay hundreds of dollars for something I cant play all that often.

Its starting to wear thin for sure
WHAT IS SO DAMN DIFFICULT ABOUT ACCOUNT VERIFICATION OF SOME KIND.
There has GOT to be some kind of verification, phone call, Credit Card something, WHy in GODS name do we just allow these little good for nothing script kiddies on the grid which can be brought down with SUCH apparrent ease?

I've been around almost two years (Alt ^^;) I used to tell everyone I came across about how cool SL was and anymore I tell them (even with the free account) To stay the hell away cause its not worth their time. If they can finaly shape up.. ACTUALLY take more steps towards greifers .. TAKE steps towards getting better LIVE help and what not. AND better programming then I will tell people to come to SL once again.

I hear ya sandy. Not sure what anyone can really do though. In common Sence a person would believe "creating a virtual world where users create the content" would only bring in the crafter types and those who wish to utilize the tools for business purposes. But what i've seen in SL its like counterstrike + warcraft combined. Stupidity + kids who have a fascination with huge leaking genetal body parts... >.>

I tried SL for a rl conference place..

I joined mainly cause I moved to NY for school and didn't like the immediate environment (my relatives) much. Totally non-stimulating. But there was a film festival being planned at the university I was/am attending, and the organization was a huge mess. Some of the folks integral to the setups were from overseas and made communicating, getting ideas across cumbersome and just another task that had to be done. I had the idea of everyone jumping on SL to have fun while we had to exchange notes and things.

I felt very awkward suggesting SL, but they went for it. It WORKED. And still does. Around film festival time for the last 2 years and this, the 3rd year, it really helps. The only negative was/is the money we had/have to spend in land and tier. And lag and grid shutdowns, now, too. But the film festival has relatively flexible and featherweight responsibilties, and it can swing with most all SL foibles.

For more serious enterprises, for RL institutions/entities that need reliabilty, responsiveness of customer service, and just plain availablity, I'd have to say that SL may not be a good venue at the present time.

In a REAL life institution where a bunch of folks and myself go on SL on our breaks when we're working longer than usual periods, one of the admin guys who sits down at the puter too caught the wave of excitement about doing RL conferencing in SL. When much or some of the important staff is all over the country, it would save him time and effort in conference calls and things.

At the same time the administrator was planning for contiguous sims to be the conferencing/online educational/in-servicing trial for the facility, he/we got hit with the big three. The grid attacks, the lag, the bad customer service. When indignantly and rabidly trying to debate a Linden about why customer service lacked, he was ejected from the game , a unit secretary was stuck forever in a personal attack of sorts by some sort of BDSM person during a high lag period, and all our personal data had been compromised by an some sort of exploit the previous week. When trying to demo SL for the meeting, he couldn't get on. It was down, but had not been posted as being down on the forum. It was a huge and embarrassing attempt that he will probably not want to repeat. For the most part, he asked 'me' what I was going to do about it. UH. Well, nothing can be done, I told him. But I made the calls that were really token expressions of frustration and earnest attempts on both sides of the line.

Will the facility do important RL business in SL? Probably not in the near future. It's still a good idea. In theory. But the beta for more crucial RL enterprises is not over yet.

Just my own embarrassing experience as an SL/RL business proponent gone to rehab:)
