Weird Application lag

I just bought a brand new card: GeForce 7800 GS OC 256mb, and my inworld FPS hovers around 5. Everything lags... dragging windows, menu's, and typing.

I made sure that the video card IS plugged into a power thingy.
Ive also tried both, Nvidia drivers AND the NGO optimized drivers.

System Specs:

p4 3.4ghz
2 gig pc3200 ddr400 ram
Geforce 7800 GS OC 256mb
-------- Thats all the important stuff right?

I just reinstalled Windows XP pro about 2-3 days ago and the only thing ive installed is SecondLife and Adobe Photoshop.

In fact, my older card (6600 GT 128mb) runs faster than the new card. I've swapped them out and checked.

Any ideas?

I've tried turning AGP on/off, as well as reducing the video memory used.

I pulled out the 7800 and put in my 6600 and was getting 20fps. I put the 7800 in and my fps drops to 5.

I guess I will return the 7800 because its not worth having a super-duper top of the line video card if it doesnt work well with the only thing i do on my PC which is SL'ing. And i hate digging around inside the PC box because i feel like im about to get electrocuted with every move i make. :(

The 7800 looks like it may be incompatible with SL. I am a new player and started a thread today reporting that I was finding SL unplayable due to lag. I also am using a 7600GT so as far as SL goes that card may be borked.

This woud not be the first time that an Nvidia card was not compatible with a game. For example, the NVidia 6800 series performed very poorly in Everquest II by causing stuttering of the graphics.

Wasn't Torley using a 7800 on her new system and it worked great? I would be interested if other people are having difficulties with the 7800, as I am soon to be upgrading with improving SL performance in mind.

Yeah she is, two of them I think. Ok try this:

Download Driver Cleaner Pro, follow the instructions, clean out your cabs & old drivers.

Downlod the latest NGO Optimized Drivers.

See if this helps at all.

nVidia released a new driver 2 days ago which "Adds support for GeForce 7800 GS AGP".

Give what Dan suggested a spin since the 7800 GS is so new... to clarify, my GPU is a 7800 GT. Only one of them, and the rest of my computer parts are pretty much stock reliable. So somewhat different. My CPU is an Opteron 170, gently overclocked, and my full config is here along with more details.

Hope runs smoother for you soon, Briana. :)

There is a definite issue with the 7800 Series. I have a 7800 GT.

It would appear in areas of complex geometry something triggers a loop in ObjectUpdate calls, which eats the GPU, and continues to do so until you get out of the Sim.

I bug reported this a few weeks back, no response as yet.

Chage, got a specific area and direction to face in other 7800-owning peeps can go to, so that I can have this happen to me too?

That has to do with the fact that they have just come out with an AGP version of the card, previously available only as PCI Express.

I've confirmed and reproed the issue Chage is having, and I have it too. It's actually the same thing I bugreported a few weeks ago, and I'm sending in another one.

Let's get this streamlined: Briana, is your LOCAL LIGHTING on? Ifso, turn it off, and see what happens.

Altho, that doesn't clearly explain why your 6800 Ultra is considerably better--unless there are other factors involved.

Local Lighting performance is atrocious... I can't recommend it in good conscience, but I lurve using it for still pictures. I feel so conflicted! Still... something seems to have happened since 1.7.x that made it far less useable.

I sent in a new bugreport so LL QA can investigate, but here's how it goes.

My Draw Distance = 128 m and my Local Lighting is ON. Go to Triangulum (170, 180, 37). Have DEBUG on (that's Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D) and select FRAME CONSOLE from it.

Then, watch your screen fill with blue.

I flew in closer and I saw a lot of Full Bright panels, but couldn't isolate a whole heap of objects with Material = Light. If anyone finds those, please post here. But this is a very easy repro for this problem I've been having for awhile.

Umm... I'm running two 7800 GTX's and getting 32.5 now in 1280x1024 with 10 avs on screen; my roommate Liam Roark is running a 7800 GS and is getting 28 or so under the same conditions...

Am I doing something wrong? (right?)

Briana, are you *SURE* you installed the drivers.... When we put in our 7800 GS, the downloaded 81.98's looked like they installed but they *did not*, it was still using generic drivers.

I *HAD* to install from the CD that came with the card -- that's something i usually never do. but it worked. The 7800 GS is a new card, i'm not sure how up and up the downloadables are right now on nvidia's site.

Yea i used the Nvidia 81.98_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql drivers and still got crapp performance. I even uninstalled all the drivers before reinstalling the 81.98 drivers.

Torley - I do have local lighting off... You kinda learn things like that after nearly 2.5yrs in SL :p My draw distance is 128 and everything else is set to default. When i have my 6600 plugged in, I turn on max object/avatar/tree detail.

Well, I'm returning the 7800 today and will probably get either a new Dishwasher (my current one is trying to poison me) or a 256meg vid card (6600 or 6800).

does 256megs of vid ram make a big difference?

As of today in SL, 256 meg of video ram is nice but it reall y isn't of much benefit. The highest video ram usage i have seen is 120 meg at a point near the welcome area. The vast majority of SL uses on average about 60 meg. I have a 512 meg video card that I can turn down to 64 megs and see no effect on the game. 32m and it goes all to heck though.
