Massive performance issues

I have been off the game for a month. I get back online just today to very bad network performance. Taking a massively long time to log in. Once it does, game is severely laggy. Visual perfomance is fine, the network just seems unresponsive. Most prims and textures are taking a very long time to download, and I can't move - mostly. While trying to move I have gotten stuck going in one direction rather quickly. I can see that my locator is moving on the grid, but nothing shows up visually but my character, always frozen in position.

I have waited upwards of a half an hour to try and let the client settle down before doing anything to no avail.

Is this a common problem after the recent updates?

I think local lighting got borked in this update, turn it off and see what happens. Also if you're using an ATI graphics card, you should download the new Omega drivers.

Of course no one knows. I've done everything short of wiping my hard drive and starting over to get SL to work. And I was about to buy a premium account too.

I'm confused. You say visual performance is fine, yet you also say you can't move and that textures are not loading as they should. What is your definition of "visual performance"?

Do you mean you can move the camera freely and fluidly, but the avatar has trouble walking around? If that's the case, then I'd agree it sounds like a network problem. If the camera is not fluidly moveable, then I'd say it's a more generalized problem, most likely video related. As has been mentioned, local lighting is currently broken. Turn it off if you have it on. That solves most people's problems.

Beyond that, what kind of machine are you on? If you've only got a 32MB video card, they're no longer supported. You'll have to upgrade (which you really should do anyway; 32MB isn't good for much of anything anymore).

Have you checked the stats bar (ctrl-shift-1) to see what's going on? There's a page on the wiki that explains what all the different stats are and what normal numbers for them should look like. Looking at those numbers is usually the best first step in pinpointing a problem.
