Is SL being recoded in one of the Microsoft .Net languages? Is this a move away from the "open" components that SL is built on?

SL is being writen in C++ for use with MSVC .NET compiler (probably 2k3). It's in one of the meeting transcripts. SL is not being re-writen with .NET componants.

Really, by now they should be using the intel C compiler, it does a much better job at floating point arithmetic, and gets better performance on intel and amd chips. ![]() -Adam _____________________

With a linux client comming out soon and the servers being linux as it is, I doubt .net stuff (better know as fruit salad) will creep in. then agin we have Mono so....

Install, and go. (licenses are around US$500 each IIRC, but only one person needs to have it installer: the person doing final release builds) -Adam _____________________

I thought the performance gained by the intel compiler came at a price. It some cases it will compute and end up with the wrong answer. Witch is ok, if you know about it and Know how to programa round it.

[FWIW, since it was mentioned in this thread, OSMP is written in C++ and Python. The linux compiler is gcc, and the windows compiler is .net 2003.
The compiler doesnt drastically affect the functionality of the product, though it might affect execution speed. More important is the choice of libraries, the architecture, and the coding itself. That said, my main reason for choosing .net 2003 over cygwin and mingw is that .net 2003 compiler compiles at least twice as fast, and produces smaller code. .Net libraries themselves are probably unsuited for SL, which targets Mac, and hopes shortly to target linux. I've not considered it for OSMP, because OSMP server should be able to run on linux, and because many developers like linux and mac. You can get the .net 2003 compiler free at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=272be09d-40bb-49fd-9cb0-4bfa122fa91b&DisplayLang=en Note that OSMP is OpenSource (http://metaverse.sourceforge.net), so feel free to come over and have a look, ask questions, maybe contribute some code. You can show technical feasibility for your preferred SL feature suggestions; you can use it as a personal tech demo; and maybe, just maybe, OSMP could become big in its own right. ] Azelda _____________________
