I'm newbie. I logged on and was told to update. As soon as the update was done, I crashed. I tried several more times but each time I crashed. Crash reports were filed, but I don't know if it is the update or me.

Hi Ambimom.
What video card do you have, are you running the newest drivers for that card? Is the video card on the supported list (intel and sis might work but kinda maybe mode, as not supported). _____________________

Yes, I have the latest drivers and the video card was working fine this morning....I've been using the same for three weeks with no problems...It only began after the update so I have to assume that is what is causing my difficulty.

Many unsupported video cards finally bit the preverbial dust with this update. We really need to know more information. Your hardware and driver versions. |

What are catalyst drivers? I don't seem to find them. Where do I look for them?

Hey Ambi... I only have two crash reports from you, and both are nearly a month old.
One shows a desktop using Intel graphics (which isn't compatible). The other's a laptop with a Mobility 9600. At the time, the drivers were from 2004, so they certainly need updating. http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechMobileATI |

A month ago? That's weird...because it was two days ago that this began on my laptop only. I was able to get into the software and it was loading the "world" when it gave me crash message and said it was sending report.
My desktop is working fine and except for a minor glitch a while ago that seemed to have corrected itself, I have no problem accessing SL from my desktop. As for the laptop, I have checked the ATI site, which directed me to Gateway for driver updates. The Gateway site only has a driver from 2004, which I will try. I'll let you know if it works. I had no problem at all until the latest SL software upgrade. |

Well I updated my ATI driver....the latest one (and only one) was 2004.
Then I tried Second Life again.....and it started. I got the log on screen and then it said I had a mandatory download 1.10.2 6/7/2006 of approximately 25K. The download loaded....and asked if I wanted to restart SL... I said yes... I got sign on screen and it began loading.....then at the precaching stage it closed and said it was detecting hardware.....and stopped. I clicked on SL to start it...then I got "Logon failed, try again" I waited.... Clicked on SL again...I got sign on screen...it began to load as normal and stopped again at pre-caching stage to detect hardware.... I have removed SL from my laptop. |

It's NOT guaranteed to work as Laptops often due need drivers from the manufacturers website but on the ATI site download the latest generic Catalyst drivers. They may or may not work but worth trying.

Newest Update Now Works!

For what it is worth, I am now able to log on again. As I suspected, the problem was not my video card. So thanks to all the folks at Linden Labs who ironed out the bugs. I am relieved.
