The floodgates are open and residents are logging onto Second Life in droves. This means that thousands of people are attempting to log in at once. The 1.6 login process has been improved quite a bit since the 1.5 releases; however, in the first few hours of 1.6, logins might time out while we get everyone inworld as fast as we can.

If you get the "despite our best efforts, something has gone wrong" message during this time, it likely means that your login timed out. Please wait a few minutes, then try again.

If you receive this message on Friday still, let us know at support@secondlife.com !

I'm in Australia... it is Friday! When will you all go to bed and let the morning people log in?

Fair enough. So what does it mean when you wait through the queue and get to "Contacting User Server," then get returned to the splash screen with no error message?

Interesting...I got the same message when trying to log in to 1.6 preview a while back, thought it might be related. I've experienced this kind of thing before with other MMO's being updated, so I expect it....guess I'll just have to wait and see :p

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've noticed that repeating the login process w/o shutting down completly that the progress bar raises a little bit every time. We'll see where this goes :)

MADE IT! SEE YALL THERE! GIT ER DONE!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

blah! as soon as I tried going somewhere I crashed (well I got there, but no longer than a minute later CRASH! :p)

Let's try again

Hi Lee

I am getting that message that you mentioned. I understand why and am not complaining or asking for help. What I want to know is, the error message suggests sending a copy of the second life log to SL via the Support page. I assume there is no reason to do so since this is a night of special burden on the system. Is that correct? Would sending the log file actually increase the load on the system?

------------------------------------------------------------

This is a moot point for me now, a few more tries brought success. The question about whether it would be useless and perhaps even bog things down more to be sending in log files at a time such as this remains valid but low pritority.

Following login behavior seems fine so far. Haven't seen anyone else yet, I am out in the boondocks.

You know what I never get about this, is why it is different after a patch, than any other time.

I mean, the same number of people more or less log in every night.

So, sure, there might be a little bit more pent-up expression today because of the patch, with a little more time taken on each one to update and log in.

So, yeah, log-ins on a normal day might stagger over time, with some people logging in early and staying on all day, others only for 15 minutes, still others for one hour but much later, etc.

And we all know what really happens in SL, which is you and your friends -- and you know because you watch their calling-card log-ins dancing across your screen constantly -- crashout out of the game, or re-log due to lags, especially if you minimize windows and then the game lags.

So...why is it so different with a patch? I mean, it isn't really that many more people attempting log-ins is it?

One of the Linden posts indicated there was extra load on the servers because 1.6 updates your inventory in some way.

I've been trying to get in for 1/2 hour with no luck. It either times out at Waiting for Response or at Contacting User Server.

I've been thru this kind of thing with plenty of other MMO's....it's not just the number, it's that same number of folks logging in at the same time, not to mention the update itself.

Think of it like a funnel: You pour a little bit of sand thru it that sand gets thru easily. Now fill that funnel up with sand...you get some of it going thru, but not as quickly as if it were a little bit at a time....the sand will eventually go thru the funnel, but takes a bit longer.

It's the same with any MMO on an update day, just have to be patient :)

my experience tonight
03-31-2005 20:11
i had to try three or four times. it took a total of about 15 mintues. in my previous experience in earlier patches, itf it didn't work in about 5 minutes it never worked, and was better to restart .

if say one thousand people would normally have been on at the time the system reopened, and they are true SL junkies, they will all be logging in withing minutes of becoming aware of the reopeniing. this by itself would be an unsual load. some people who would not normally login at this time would log in in order to see the changes. this would add to the unusal load.
other additional people would log in in hopes seeing the amusing missing textures and gray avatars.

many people keep their print notifications turned off so that they don't get constant information about who is logging in and logging off.

on my system i run in windowed mode and switch between monitors or between programs on the monitor that SL is on either by using the taskbar or alt tabbing. Sl never minimizes and their is never any lag.

SL hardly every crashes.

what are your system specs and SL settings and what kind of internet connection are you using?

There's been a hitch after most patches because the thousands of people who might be logged in at once, are all hitting the login server at the same time when we come back online.

When it's business as usual, the number of logins at any given moment is a tiny fraction of the mass of logins that happens when we re-open Second Life.
