Why Does my PC Freeze after exiting SL?

I have SL, SL voice beta and SL voice first look installed on my PC, Is or should I have all 3 installed or do I just need One, I like and use SL voice first look because of the Voice feature, so Do I need the other Two??. The major Problem I have and that needs addressed is after exiting SL My PC Frezzes sometimes..but not every time, I've used tech support twice, but still don't have an answer. When I say my PC freezes, by that I mean SL still shows up in the task manager and I cannot manually shut it down, also last time it froze my clock at the exact time and I couldn't click start or open anything in the Taskbar,so I just used the Ole' CTRL, ALT and DELETE to bring up the Task Manager and clicked SHUTDOWN from there: The result was that I still could not shut down my pc, so I held in the power button for 5 seconds and off she went. I have a dual core 3.00 GHZ processor, 2 Gigabytes of Ram, Nvidia Geforce 8500GT PCIe Graphics card with 256MB of Ram. My OS is Win XP Home with Service Pack 2. The only thing I can think of that might be causing this prob..at least the last time was that my ISP was experiencing Tech Probs, but I was unaware at the time..still tho the other 4 times..I'm not sure. If anyone could give me any advice or help with this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You.

Try uninstalling SL and reinstalling it again. Sounds like something in the "quit" function of the program is corrupted causing your computer to crash when excecuted.

I doubt it's the three clients causing your problem as each is separate from the other. But if you do do the uninstall and reinstall and you still have the problem I could be related. I've had programs crash my computer on exit before and it's always been the program in question at fault. As long as the program worked without crashing before it started with the crashing problem after a while a simple uninstall and reinstall fixed it for me.

Good luck. :)

Thanks Peggy, but I tried the whole uninstall/reinstall process about 6 days ago, including clearing out sl cache and temp folder...and for about 4 log in sessions it was fine, then after exiting my pc froze once. Since then I have logged in 5 times and upon exiting pc froze again, So it does this about every 4 or 5 sessions and I am not sure Why. Maybe I'll come up with an answer. I do Thank You for your Input Though.

Use Task Manager's "Eng Process" method
07-08-2007 12:57
Some of the versions of SL's client software eat memory (memory leak) and nearly completely lock my system upon a normal ctrl-q quit, as seems to happen with yours. After any such event with a new "improved" client, I have learned that with that particular client, I need to keep the task manager open before I start SL, with the processes tab chosen, and either the CPU column of the Mem Usage column set up so that it displays from most CPU/MemUsage to least. When SL hangs on closing, I kill the SL process by selecting the SecondLife process and "End Process". It ends immediately and terminates the near complete system lock.

Doing it through the Applications tab of the Task Manager just doesn't cut it--Task Manager applies a gentler closing process which usually completely locks my system, requiring the awful power-down to recover.

I Thank you for your input with this issue Govindira. I tried that method you described, but with no luck. When I tried to end the SL process after exiting the program, the memory of the sl process was like 320,000KB, this happened after exiting the voice beta and SL voice first look, but I don't think I had the same problem when using the main SL program. So I guess I need to just use the main program and forego voice for now. Thank you again, your response probably holds the answer, It's just a memory leak problem.

nVideo Desktop Manager?
07-10-2007 08:29
I'm sorry that it didn't work for you. One other thought, a recurrent problem on my system until I changed video drivers: nVideo Desktop Manager. If you have an nVidia video card and have enabled the nVideo Desktop Manager, it could be causing these lockups. Two or three months ago, I had installed the latest drivers and enabled the Desktop Manager--I don't know why!!--and started getting serious system lock problems in all sorts of things: Comcast Rhapsody, ZoneAlarm firewall, Second Life. I didn't make the connection, since I had forgotten that I'd enabled Desktop Manager. Anyway, I got a new video card, had to install new drivers, and this time did not enable Desktop Manager--it takes a lot to even find it!--and my problems went away. Curious, I investigated Comcast Rhapsody's FAQ and found that they had a known problem under Desktop Manager and recommended disabling it.

One would think that nVidia would warn that its Desktop Manager may conflict with software on one's system, since it seemed to have such a sweeping effect: it damaged the function of three normal applications on my system for example.

Good luck!

Marz,

I think the leak is still in FL and Voice. With these, on exit it can take up to a minute until the program cleans itself up but this will be fixed eventually (it was fixed with 1.17.3 main).

Thank you Govindira. I do have an Nvidia card, so I have disabled the desktop manager, I do think that is part of the problem. Again I Thank You for your help. :)

Thank You Nicholaz. I think you're right. I don't think I have the same problem with the Main. Thanks!! :)
