SL causing computer crashing...

I'm having this problem over and over, and I'm not finding any solutions that fix it. After I'm on for a while (or for a few minutes, for that matter,) the game freezes my entire system, and causes me to have to manually restart the computer afterwards. I'm thinking that this is a MAJOR video issue because:

A.) I was overclocking my video card, therefor, causing the game to freeze even faster.

and

B.) Reinstalled my video card (actually taking out the card itself and putting it back in after uninstalling the drivers,) and I'm able to stay on longer than last time. It still crashes like crazy, but I'm able to stay on longer.

If you must know, here's what I'm running:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
Gigabyte K7 7S784 (I think) motherboard
eVGA GeForce 6800GT
1gig DDR 400 RAM

I've updated my video, updated the bios on my motherboard, updated Via (which I found out I don't have...) and just about everything I can think of. If anyone can figure this out, PLEASE respond!

  1. That 'was' had better be intentionally past tense. Overclocking ain't smart, and I'm sure it's much less intelligent with something as intense as SL.
  2. You're going to need to tell us how the crash behaves. Error messages? Pure CTD? What?
  3. "I think" is not a good thing when it comes to motherboards and updating them.

Everytime i turn on sl i can stay in 10 mins max. I used to never have this problem. It turns its self off and when i turn comp back on says overclocking failure keep default or change settings. I am no computer master but its crazy only when i turn sl on does it shut off.

Have you checked that you have this sort of problem only while running SL? It might also be a hard disk problem otherwise.

I can leave my comp on for hours chatting in im's and surfing the web and i never have a problem. If i turn sl on or city of villians it shuts its self off and i get the overclocking failure i am not too sure what that means but i have gathered its very bad so i have been trying to figure out how to fix it so i can get back to sl .

You need to do a stress test on your hardware one or two parts at a time. Download 3dmark, it will test your video card, if you crash you got a problem, if you can complete it 3 times in a row id say your good, get it here http://www.3dmark.com/download/?3dmark05.shtml. If you pass that, its time to check your CPU and ram. Try Prime95 http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v2414.exe if you pass both of these tests please post back.

Just something from my personal experience with this same kind of issue (SL locking up the entire computer in a "grk!" sort of fashion) make sure you power supply is more than able to handle all of the stuff you're throwing at it and that it is functioning correctly.
