If your connection to the router is wireless, then this knowledgebase article is relevant.

Try connecting the SL machine directly to the router using a cable.

I use a regular Router (not wireless) with a cable connection. I have noticed that many times after playing SL for a bit, the Router needs reset. I don't have this issue with any other internet applications. I even went so far as to buy a new router, but this did nothing to solve this issue. Every once in awhile I see a post here and there about people having router troubles, but I've never seen an in-depth discussion. So, I just reset every few hours :(

Routers make a good hardware firewall. After I saw how much more secure a connection they make I wish I had heard about it a long time ago.

As for your problem, when you have second life running on two machines you might have to set up (port triggering ?) I can't get into the SL knowledge base right now but I would search keywords router . And look at the Linksys site for running same game on two machines behind your router. The basic idea is that you will have the router assign different port numbers to the second machine so that both are not using the same ones.

One problem that I had with Lynksys is I had an application on one machine taking up all the ports (VPN) and the router was not timing them out. I don't run the stock software on mine but look to see on the status page when you have problems if the Active IP Connections is close to the IP Filter Maximum Ports. The stock numbers were 512 and timed out at 3600 seconds. I increased mine to 1024 and decreased the timing to 1800 seconds. There was also a firmware upgrade from Lynksys addressing the same issue but it was with bus timing. Just make sure you have the latest software from Lynksys on the router.

I have a Linksys 4 port router (wired ethernet) and had nothing but trouble with it at first. Call Linksys tech support............they helped me out and I've not had one single problem since. That was almost 5 years ago too. :) I run two computers through it almost constantly and a third once in a while. I forget exactly what the tech had me do but it had to do with the mac address. They talked me through the whole process over the phone.

linksys WRT54G router trouble solutions

I have used this same router with cable (2 years ago) and DSL now and installed a great many of them. After an initial bios update (http://www.linksys.com/downloads) I have had no trouble with it. Pre-Cisco linksys routers were very unreliable, if you have one of these throw it away and buy a new one. I dont think your problem is typical or caused by SL in particular. Also post cisco linksys routers are not 100% either. sometimes you get a bad one. You say you have tried a second router and dont use wireless so the problem may be with your ISP. Some ISP use modems that are finiky when a second computer is added. I suspect this is by design... but who knows? This type of problem usually clears up if you use PPPOE passthrough on the modem (advanced options) and use the router (or computer) to log in.

Here's some firewall info, but maybe not relevant in this case.
