okay... so i really like the premise of this game. but i'm having some bad troubles. movement is tough, often i'll go charging headlong in one direction and can't control. other times i can't move at all. the game is kinda laggy, and i'm above all the system requirements by a lot. i'm guessing that it's mostly from writing so much data to my hard drive (since the client was only 17mb...) but, can't be too sure! thanks it advance! oh, and my computer is... 2.4ghz AMD radeon 9700 Pro 1gb DDR Corsair XMS ASUS a7n8x deluxe motherboard i *may* be behind a firewall here, dunno if that'd make a difference in playing speed.

Try going into the preferences and turning down the draw distance. 128 or 96 should be fine.
Also, turn the object detail down.
You may still notice the charging headlong problem when you cross "sim borders". You're moving from one server to another at that time.
Oh, and never overlook video card drivers. Always get the latest video card drivers.

First, you do have broadband, right? Are you on a wireless network? Satellite? It sounds like you might have a high ping, the amount of time it takes for a signal to get from your computer to the server and back. To see your ping times, press Ctrl-Shift-1, then look at "Ping Sim" and "Ping User". What do the numbers say for each? Avatar movement in SL is all handled on the server, so there's an element of drift regardless of how your computer is connected to the internet. I feel awkward posting about this here, since I don't want to totally blow off your question with a product plug, but this may help. I get around drift with "Move", a scripted device I made to help compensate for it. (It also lets you fly really fast and stops other people from pushing you.) I sell it for L$500 at my store in the Midnight City sim.

i have cable internet. and... when i try to move, it's not just a little lagginess, i mean i can't move for 30-60 seconds. and when i run off uncontrollably, it's hundreds of feet. kinda strange... both pings were between 75 and 135, and my bandwidth was around 300

In the Ctrl-Shift-1 menu, what does it report for FPS? You could try what William suggests -- turn down your graphical settings. Does that help?
