Every time I try something with the SL physics engine it fails.
Today I built a cup & ball supension for a mobil -- like wind chimes. It would stay together for about 3 mins and then fall apart.
My impression of SL so far is dim. If the engineering doesn't work why would an engineer "build" anything here? I would suggest that if it doesn't work you should remove it. Otherwise you create great expectations that eventually turn to great frustrations.

Physics has been known to be pretty badly broken for about three years now. It is hoped to be fixed in some release in some arbitrary future. Most people use kinematics to "fake" physics in most cases.

I advise going to my cave in Bodega - there is a shrine where we can beg for Havok2+.

unless theyre willing to pay ryan gordon to code a havok like physics engine for the mac i serously doubt LL being willing to spend 6 figures for a havok mac license. http://insidemacgames.com/features/view.php?ID=351hopefully theyre working on their own physics engine or considering switching to ageia. havok creates all kinds of logistic problems now, at least for the mac port.

I've seen some guys playing with a physics setup, a dropped weight lands on a pivoted platform catapulting a ball on the other end of the seesaw.
To make any physical assemblies work you need to have large enough gaps in the pivots. The gaps are large so forget making small things.
I strongly suggest faking it with kinematics and leave the physics to single objects like vehicles and bullets.

I been playing around with Havok in other places like TES4-Oblivion. They even have trouble with it. You run into a house and bump into a shelf and the stuff goes flying acrost the room. You sneak into someones elses house and hit use the shock spell "Fingers of the mountain" on a far wall, and bodies be a flyin. You Run past someone and hit them with a daedric warhammer they feal it buddeh!!! But anyway i think the physics system in a WHOLE neads redone. These things don't happen IRL lol. It's not just SL.
