I am having trouble connecting. Earlier I was actually in and then it said I had been logged out by the system. Now it is hanging at checking protocol version and then telling me the system may be down, try again later. I know the system is up, I can see people online. Is it possible fo ra griefer to use a script of some sort to keep me from logging in?

I have the same issue as you, ever since last night, and I know at least one other person who does. I couldn't even get to the website until a few minutes ago.

Seeing "Verifying Protocol Version" when Second Life is not actually down means that something's blocking Second Life's network access completely. This usually means that there's some internet security or firewall software on your computer, or your router needs reconfiguring.
I get a lot of messages from Norton Internet Security users who effectively have to uninstall Norton's program to keep it from blocking Second Life.

Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, and 13000-13050/UDP. You should configure your firewall to allow outbound traffic on those ports, and related inbound traffic.
