I am defiantly buying an iBook within this upcoming week (procrastination). I wanted to know how well the SL Mac client actually performs compared to the PC one, since I figured I would shift to using SL on my iBook and stick to playing hardcore games on my Desktop PC.

Thanks,
Jim

Depends on the age. My work bought 190 G4 iBooks back in May (we got the first edition of them). We have 512mb ram in them and i forget the chip speed. Anyway needed to put the exact same build on them and test the build. So one of the ways i tested the build was to put SL on it. SL was *not* happy. Very slow, even at most basic video settings. being around more then 3 av's lagged it to kingdom come. I would not recommend runing SL on an iBook, you would probably have better luck on a Powerbook but i can't say that for sure.

If you do get a Powerbook with an underlit keyboard they are soooo cool :D
(but it cuts down on battery life  )

Get at least a gig of ram, don't by the ram through apple. it's too expensive through them. Get the best video card you can aford. Why do you want a portable? Portable always increase cost, and lower performance per dollar.

My ibook runs sl horible. It's ok for me cause all I do is program. Infact right now in the latest vertion I have a nasty bug, to see change in dress I have to log back in. (this isn't the current rev ibook. it is the rev before) I happen to know the power books 15" 17" run sl phenomenally well. With out any problems. For isntance the world map load instantly, changes in dress, instant. I would assume the new 12" run sl the same.

the only 12" I have had to test is a few rev old. It ran sl 'ok' but had performance issues, ether because of lack of ram or lack of video memmory. My bet is would be it was the video memmory. Witch was 32 mb. The curren 12" have 64 MB.
note the current iBooks have 32MB video cards.

food for thought I have a 5.5 year old computer with a 128 mb video card. It runs sl better then my ibook. Point being with 3d games, a good video card is worth it's wieght in gold.

I'm a mac guy, but if all you want to do is play sl and games. Putting a pc together, or buy a tower computer. Mac or PC. Will offer the best performance, and the cheapest price.

BTW The combow drive works great with dvd burning.

ps student discount through apple can make an 12" PB cost as low as a high end ibook.
