Ok, so there are at least two version of the Intel dual core processor out there. the original "Core™ Duo " and the new "Core™ 2 Duo ". I can still return an HP laptop I got two months ago with a 1.83 G Core duo processor and 1 G of RAM, Nvidia 7600 with 256 k of dedicated ram. Does it make sense to then buy a Core™ 2 Duo machine with a 1.66 G processor (10% slower) but with 2g of RAM, same Nvidia gpu? Is the new version that much better? I've read a couple of reviews that suggest the new version is generally 10-15% "better" than the old, but all the "gaming" tests indicated the GPU was the bottleneck. Note: SL was not tested.... Bottom line, if I return the lappy I have, for the the same money, I can get an extra gig of RAM, the new Core™ 2 Duo procesor (albiet 10% slower speed) and a somewhat slicker case design. Oh, and the option of a free upgrade to Vista premium in January of '07. So...is it worth it?

The Core 2 is noticeably faster than the previous generations of Intel's CPUs. In my job I have the opportunity to play with quite a bit of nice hardware. A Core 2 Duo at 2.13GHz outscored a Pentium D at 3.0GHz and a Pentium 4 at 3.2GHz. The exchange you described sound very good. The Core 2 Duo will perform as well if not better than the Core Duo and double the RAM is good no matter how you look at it when it comes to SL. I say go for it.

The processor exchange will probably be about a wash; the Core 2 series is faster at any given clock speed, but the slower clock will wipe that out. But if you are really getting an extra 1GB and the Vista upgrade (which I wouldn't hurry to install when it arrives, but it might be nice to have someday) for free, jump on it!
