Sound list in create/edit gesture

Hi.

I have a few hundred sounds I've collected from around SL. I would like to make some custom gestures using them. When I try to add a sound to a gesture, I get a very short list which all happen to be in a subfolder in my Clothing folder (cat sounds, it turns out). I'm not sure why I'm not able to see the list of sounds from all other places (library, my Sounds folder, etc.).

Anyone encounter that before? Is it something stupid I'm doing?

Thanks,

ZZ

You have to have full permissions on a sound to use it in a gesture, I think.

No perms listed, full perms allowed

Possible. I found at least one instance in my inventory where I had a sound that didn't show any permissions restrictions that did not show up in my list of sounds available when working on gestures.

I have also found dozens of examples of sounds in the library with no apparent permissions restrictions that do not appear in my drop down list.

Is there some reason why the sounds may have to be from MY inventory rather than the library? Maybe so they are available to the gesture when the gesture is executed?

Any insight into why sounds with some kind of permission restriction (No Transfer) can't be used in gestures I create? Would seem the gesture might become no-transfer but still be executable.

Thanks,

ZZ

Well, if you want to use a library sound, you can just copy it over into your inventory. I'm actually kind of glad that they don't include library sounds in the dropdown list, because that would make the list huge, and I really don't care for most of those sounds. Worse yet, I can't remove library sounds.

I'm not exactly sure why they did it this way, but the same restrictions apply to textures that you might want to use in skins, as well. It seems like they just put a reference to the actual underlying sound object in the SL database into the gesture, without storing any of its inventory data such as permissions or name. Given that design decision, they kind of have to require you to have full permissions on the sound. Sound creators can then set the permissions on the gesture itself to restrict the use of the sound that they've packaged into a gesture.

The list of sounds in the pulldown list is global from the whole inventory, no matter where it is. Just like how the landmarks pulldown in the Map screen has LM's from everywhere in your inv.

And yes, alas, they won't appear in that list unless they are copy/mod/transfer.

Thank you for your insights. I believe I understand some of the lurking issues behind components being used by other things (sounds being used by gestures) may need certain permissions. Seems like inheritance might have solved that in a better way but hey, that's the Way It Is in SL.

Sounds like when I go around looking for sounds, I need to make sure there are no perms.

I will try copying the Library sounds into my own invetory to see if ... viola! ... they show up. I suspect they will.

It's a UI bug. You have to press the enter key after you're done typing your text and before hitting save.
