NEW problem with SL...

I d/l'ded the new SL version, and got on fine. However, SL seems to be taking an inordinate amount of my CPU's processing power. I'm talking 90-95% of power. And I'm running a P4 3.0ghz with 1Gig of RAM.

What's up?

SL will always use as much processor power as you have. Always.

One day, we hope, some sort of polling function will determine when it's not necessary to seep up 100% CPU in SL... would solve some people's heat problems, for sure.

Out of curiousity, are these other programs Flash or Java-based in any way? Try minimizing SL when you switch to those other programs. You should be fine.

if you need to run other things, set sl's priority down to below normal. should let anything run in the background without a problem, and shouldn't hurt sl.

But again...

But again... I never had to before, and I never had a problem until this last fix.

I hope the Lindens see this post, and maybe other are having the same prob, so they can look into it.

There are a lot of variables. Though I've perceived greater lag in game, the load on my end has not significantly increased. I'm still running SL, PS, and Poser simultaneously without problems.

I noticed it will slow down to a crawl and eventually crash if you minimize it or have it in the background for a few minutes. If you leave it long enough, it crashes with a smartheap error.

in a general way do not MINIMISE sl

keep it in background
minimising cause your system to do ram/swapping and i believe SL dont like it due to some experience with photoshop and poser

I've managed to crash SL in just about every way imaginable... It's possible =) I crash, on average about once every two hours, though it is not totally that consistent. Has been that way since August for me. I think it just reallllly doesn't like certain hardware configurations.

To avoid the lock ups, you can set the "newview.exe"'s task priority level to "Below Normal".

Interesting...

When I tries SL on another computer, even with the new version, it only took up 40-50% of my computer's resources.

I'm going to try uninstalling SL, and reinstalling it on my first computer and see if that clears up the problem.

Please tell me what your system specs are, I'm topped out at 100% CPU for newview all the time :( Course I know why I'm on a laptop LOL
