I normally wont download an updated viewer until I allow others to be the guinea pigs but today I'm feeling adventurous. When I attempt to install, however, I keep getting this error message:
Error Opening file for writing:
C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app_settings\mozilla\components\xulutil.dll
It gives the option to skip the file but don't know whether that'd be ok or not. Anyone have any ideas?
*Really I should just skip the damn update, but oh well.

I am getting the exact same message. No use skipping the few files that wont install, as I did this, tried to log in and it asks me to install the new version again. What the hell is going on? :/

My suggestion would be, reinstall the old client, make a backup of the files the new client installer is missing, install the new client and paste in the stuff it didn't have, using your backup.

Same problem here. I skipped the parts where it asks for the Mozilla stuff, but then it gets farther and stops on a bunch of other files near the end. if I skip those and start SL, I get the same message to reinstall the new client

lets see if this method works (for those that have IE and Firefox both installed):
- remove SL completely - set IE as default browser, can be done by running IE, it should ask if you want to set it as default browser - once done, reinstall sl

I've got the same problem and I am running SL from the candidate viewer but cannot run it any other way, I even uninstalled firefox and it made me go through the whole download again and just installed it again...sign ...why do they make us download crap if it isn't going to work right? DAMN frustrating, I think the upgrades should be optional because not everyone can afford to keep updating hardware and software just to play a pixel game!

There has to be a reason why some downloaded the new viewer with no problems but yet some are having these problems, can someone please enlighten us what it is we have on our computers stopping the rest of the upload? PLZ

Maybe deleting the cache of your browser would help. It looks like the first version of the new client that got uploaded, messed up, and they uploaded a fixed version later. If they used a different server for the second upload, your browser might still try to download the crippled version from the old server. *shrugs* It's at least worth a try ^^;

I had this problem too and after getting on live chat with Linden, was able to solve the problem by doing the following:
1) Uninstall SL completely.
2) Delete the whole ProgramFiles/SecondLife folder. If it won't let you delete the folder, you may have to look in Services and shut down any instances of SL that are still running from your attempts to log in earlier.
3) Restart your computer.
4) Run the install again BEFORE you start any other programs.
This is just a guess, but I think that if you installed the latest Firefox update recently and haven't restarted your computer since, it's got files still open. I noticed when I restarted that Windows was configuring updates, and probably while it's in the middle of its "updating" state and you haven't restarted, screwy things are going on. Anyhow, it was OK after that so hope this helps some other folks.
