Lately we've been having an issue where Second Life will crash for one or both of us. Not that abnormal really, but whatever is occurring is causing the modem to hiccup, completely blowing us offline for a few. Yes we run a router. No there is no problem with either the modem or the router. I have 20+ years experience working in computers, mainly hardware related and everything has been tested and as a drastic resort switched out. Doesn't make any difference what we run as far as modem or router or which computer. They all react this way. The other symptom that sometimes occurs is the firewalls get hit by an intrusion attempt when the crash occurs.

Hi Dmitri--I don't know what to suggest based on the info you gave, apart from testing without the router in the middle, but've moved your post to Technical Issues as it's the right place.
Please don't hesitate to contact our support Lindens too with further details of what has been happening to you. _____________________

I have that problem! (I think!) It drives me insane. I can't say I ever thought it was SL but after reading this, it occurs to me that may be the case. I'm always on SL
on some name or another.. anyways,It seems random, and its been quite frequent recently. Sometimes the mini map turns red, sometimes not. While in SL, the following will happen as I am crashing: I can not move or chat, but I can hear others chatting, and see others moving just for a while. Maybe 20 seconds. Then, nothing. Dead connection. Does this happen to you Dmitri? My roomate and I both use SL, but like I said, I never considered SL to be the problem so I haven't spoken with him about that possibility. We've tested the problem with and without the router, using all new cables, changing outlets and surge protectors on the router and modem. We even swapped our modem for a new one! It really doesn't seem to be hardware. Nothing has helped it. Oh and our internet is cable. ~aDen |

I am also on cable and it only happens with Second Life. Thing is when it does occur I ahve to take everything down and reset to even surf as my connection is completely blown out of the water. Again this is not an equipment issue as it has been tested six ways to sunday by myself and our ISP.

Torley, just so you know Dmi has been my pc tech for over 2 years and has a return rate of practically zero. The router isn't the problem. I can assure you there is nothing on this end causing the problem. aDen, that is pretty much what happens to us. Although as far as chat goes I really can't say as I'm usually building where there is no one within chat range. I just know if I type something in it doesn't come up. Thanks for the link. Going to look at it now. _____________________

Are they like mine? edit: Have you seen this? /111/2c/99806/1.html Ok I've read that thread for the most part. We were having major packet loss problems at one time but that seems to have been cured by replacing the modem with a new Motorola modem. We also have to power down the modem to be able to get back online. This is now starting to happen at least once, if not twice, a day, whereas when it first started it only occured every other day or so. Something is definately happening on LL's end to cause this. What remains to be seen is if they do something about it. Like Jitar, we are also tired of having our pcs and ISP being blamed for problems that occur on LL's end and not ours. _____________________

I haven't been here in SL for very long but what time I have spent learning about it has been fun... til now... For a couple of weeks everything was spiffy... log in, walk, fly, chat, everything worked will as a new person to this can get it to. ![]() Yesterday I logged in and after about 2 minutes had lagged out, or so I thought... but now anytime I open the program, my internet connection crashes and *POOF* Saffy's gone! Can anyone help me figure this out cause it is quite irritating and I do want to get back in and STAY so I can continue this learning experience? Thank you in advance! I had started a new topic and posted this after searching around the board for anyone with similar problems. It wasn't until this morning that I found this thread... guess I didn't search around as well as I should have. ![]() |

Hopefully, more people who are having this problem will speak up about it here so that LL can see it is not an isolated problem and not one that can be blamed on our computers, modems, routers, or internet connections. _____________________

I may have a similar problem. I just joined a few days ago, and I have a brand new DSL modem, no router. When I try to transport, I get a transport initializing page where the bar, after a long time, gets about half full. Then it flips me back to where I was, or just sits there forever. When I get flipped back, I can't move or fly. I can rotate though. The ONLY way to fix this is to logout, restart the modem, and log back in. Even after I log out the modem won't work until I restart it. This has only happened in SL. Sometimes, even without transporting, just by marking a point on the map and exiting, I'm stuck there. and sometimes it seems to just happen randomly. this is a royal pain!

Problem continues on....

Don't know how many days this has been going on now but sheeeesh...
It's very disheartening to log into SL and lose my internet connection like clockwork immediately afterwards. I had been considering purchasing a membership but now I'm to the point of saying fark it all and never log back in... 'tis a shame too... I could have had so much fun in SL. It had lots of potential for ending intermitant boredom. |

I have been having this exact same problem, as have several friends. We were all just going along, when suddenly one of us would bomb out, and be stuck in space. To the rest of the users, they would disappear, but their green dot would remain on the map, and what they said in chat and IM could be heard for a short time (though wouldn't show up on their screen), after which SL and their connection would bomb.
I've had this happen to me personally several times, with increasing frequency, including being stuck in place, only being able to turn, chats not appearing, etc. And then my internet connection dies, and I have to restart the modem (I'm on DSL). This really needs to be addressed and not with: "You're all having concurrent hardware failure!" -update- Odd, I happened to be watching SL's debug window as I got these symptoms of being frozen in place, etc. (might be an ISP problem this time though)... Instantly it started filling up with these: CODE
Predominated by the first message. Does this just mean that the connection to the server was lost? Maybe it's unrelated, but the symptoms are the same. |

This may help... You may need to set your logins to different ports.
You have to do this after each patch or install of SL. Go to the Second Life icon on your desktop Right click and go to propertys. You will see a line like this: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" Add a space -port (13000 - 13050) It will look something like: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13000 And change the port number for each pc on the router. For Example: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13001 "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13002 Thats what Ive had to do to avoid crashes. |

We've been doing this for a year now. This was never an issue for us. We still get knocked offline daily. There have even been times when LL somehow "blew out" out port settings and we have had to change them to be able to log back in. The most recent that this has happened to me personally was about 2 weeks ago. So no, setting ports is not going to correct the problem, as the lost connection issue only started with the 1.9 version and we have been in SL since 1.5 or 1.6. _____________________

Already done this and that's not the issue. It is not just crashing SL..it is TOTALLY booting us offline for a few seconds til the modem gathers itself. Also there have been recorded firewall hits and intrusion attempts originating from SL itself at these times. Unfortunately except for Torley's little bit, no one seems willing to adress this and at this point in time it is an ongoing issue.. Next thing I am likely to here is no one else is having the problem we all seem to be having. We have also, as of last night spoken with a live helper and a linden in regards to this . We were told a more technically based Linden would speak to me about it. As of yet..nothing more. Almost ten days without any satisfactory response. I've worked hi tech for years now and never seen this type of lack of support before. |

I'm bumping this thread because I was told by Patsy that someone who deals with the bugs would be contacting me regarding our problem. This was Friday. As of yet I have not heard from anyone. Hopefully by keeping this on the front page of this section someone will finally contact us and address the issue. If I don't hear from someone by Friday, May 5th, then I will have to conclude that LL really doesn't care one way or another about us as customers and the over 2000 USD I have spent on this program in less than a year was a bad investment on my part. This has been an ongoing problem for weeks, with bug report having been filed and repeated requests for help.
