I have the same problem, I've tried to get help by email, but I think I'll have answer tomorrow.
CODE

Thanks for your inquiry. In order to diagnose the problem, I will need
to look at the log file generated by Second Life during its inital
startup phase. The file is labeled Secondlife.log and is usually located
in the C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Application
Data\SecondLife\logs folder on your hard drive. If it does not appear
in that directory, you will need to turn on hidden file types. To do
so, please select the "Tools" option at the top of your open foler, then
select "Folder Options." Next, click the "View" tab and select "Show
Hidden Files."

Please respond to this issue by attaching the file so I can more closely
examine the problem.

My response:
CODE
I don't have SecondLife folder in Application data (and nowhere in Documents
and Settings). A think the problem is that Second Life cannot make his
folder. I have polish version of windows and path to this file would be
"C:\Documents and Settings\Ktoś\Dane aplikacji". Maybe SecondLife is trying
to save in Application Data, or can't deal with username (Ktoś). If you cant
see letter "ś", it's like s' (apostrophe over the s). Is there any way to
solve it? I tried to make folder Application data, but i can't turn off
"read only", and SecondLife still shows the error.

Now I'm waiting for them to respond.

So probably special characters are not issue here, and this response was automatic.

Secondlife wont work with an windows account that contains special characters, create another windows login that uses standard ascii characters and login to that until the bug (listed in known issues) is fixed

From: someone
special characters
"Special" here denotes "non-ASCII" not "ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1)". This has been a long standing bug.

Yes and I'm using latin-2 (or windows-1250 according to web encodings). Loging as other user (without this special/diacritic chars) solved my problem. Now only my netadmin stands in my way :)

I have the same problem. I created a second admin account in my Windows XP and SL started fine.

As I do not want to have several user accounts in my PC, does anyone know or heard rumours about when this bug is going to be solved ?

It should be an easy one. In fact this is the first game I ever saw not being able to run because of this bug... but maybe I have only been lucky so far.
