Skin textures mapping incorrectly!!!

I have taken all my skins out of my vendors untill further notice. Somthing has changed in SL, and I just got a report of textures not mapping correctly on the face. A bug report has been filed with LL, and I am looking into the problem myself. Appearently it has only affected one person so far (after going into appearance and changing their hair). Hopefully this issue is not global.

I advise anyone wearing a skin texture to not make any appearance changes for a while!

Although I don't wear a skin, after the 1.5.11 update, my avatar changed subtlely, to the point where people kept asking me if I had made a change to my avatar. I had several copies of the same avatar, and I checked it, and they all look the same - and slightly different from how they looked before. Was some change made in avatar rendering? That would also explain skins being off - it seems like features on my avatar's face widened or something.

Here's an example of what to watch out for.

Nam,

That happens to me ALL the time, all over my body, when I am changing sometimes, usually a trip into appearence fix's it, or simply wearing other clothes or skins/makeup for abit, wearing the item it happened on again, then it appears fixed.

Also, its been happenin for about 3 months now....

Willow, this problem is similar, BUT, it is terminal, meaning it STICKS!! Even a complete reinstall of the SL client application fixes nothing! I gave the person in this pic a custom patch texture to temporarily fix the problem, but she is stuck like that, it seems.

I also troubleshooted another person that had a tattoo style facial texture do the same thing. They ran on a Mac, and mistakenly tried to apply one of my tattoo textures over my skin already on the tattoo layer (how they did this, I don't know, but that was their explanation to me). Simply removing the facial texture solved the issue and they were able to wear the skin without any issues. Very strange why the same texture would map completely different from one Av to another. I even went back and uploaded a fresh TGA file from my master file, applied it to my face (with the correct results) and gave it to the other person (just to make sure we had the same file) and he got the same bad results, almost as if the texture was rotated incorrectly on his face.

This is an old bug. It will look correct in the appearance thumbnails, but looks incorrectly mapped out of appearance. If the skins are modifiable all they need to do is go into appearance, change the pigment slider by 1, and resave it. That should fix it.

This appears to be different Chip. The first thing that people wearing my advanced skins learn to do is trigger a server update using that technique. I have it documented in my troubleshooting section of my skin manual.

Problem Fixed

Ok, I was just informed that the person with the texture issue managed to fix themself when I suggested they removed my patch texture (oddly familiar, and you might be right Chip) to revisit the problem. I'm still trying to duplicate this on my own, but no luck so far. Since this issue seems to not be terminal, and I have had no other incidents reported, I will put my vendors back out tomorrow.

Cheers, NAM

Glad you got it sorted Nam. I've had similar issues a couple of times with people where the corruption seemed to persist and I ended up giving them a new skin. If it looks corrupted in the appearance thumbnails also then it would be a different problem (cache corruption?), but if it looks okay in appearance then it's probably just the same old bug.

This has been a long outstanding problem for me.
