I have an odd issue that SL Tech Support has not solved to date. I lost all system sound when the 1.9.0.21 update installed. No in-world sound or streaming music works. At the same time, no sound is available in any other WinXP Pro application. All system sounds work before SL is started and resumes as soon as I log out of SL. I have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS Pro sound card. All drivers are up to date. Video is an ATI All In Wonder Pro 9800 (though I doubt it involves the video card).

Any ideas how to get the sound working?

Problem continues

That is the funny thing. I have no sound in SL as well as any other windows application, but ONLY when SL is running. I have uninstalled SL completely, removing all registry and profile information as well as all sound drivers. I reinstalled all sound drivers and ran the driver update from Creative Labs, then did a full fresh installation of SL.

When I start my Windows XP box and try to play music for example, everything works fine. I then start SL. No SL sounds are muted. Streaming sound is activated. I get no sound. I go back to any media player and try to play the same MP3 or WAV I used for the test prior to starting SL. No sound.

As soon as I exit SL, I try playing the MP3 or WAV again. Sound plays - no problems.

How can this be anything but a problem with the latest SL client? Sound works before starting SL and after exiting SL, but no sound while SL is running.

I have no sound of any kind while running SL. No SL sound effects, no SL streaming audio. Nothing is muted, in world or on my system. While SL is running and has no sound, any other windows application that makes sound produces sound. I cannot play any sound files (e.g. listening to college lectures while running SL, watching TV while in SL).

All sound applications work when SL is not running. All sound applications do not produce sound while SL is running. As soon as I exit the SL client, all sound applications once again produce sound.

Final Resolution.

The sound did not work if the SL client was open, minimized or not. I finally fixed it by uninstalling SL, uninstalling ALL Creative Labs software, searching the hard drive for all preference files for both SL and Creative, deleting them. I edited the registry to ensure all references to Creative and Second Life/Linden were deleted.

I then reinstalled the Creative Labs Audigy 2 software and drivers. I rebooted, updated all Creative Labs software via soundblaster.com, then rebooted again.

Only then did I install the current SL client. Problem FINALLY fixed after several attempts. Apparently the last update of the SL client resulted in some corruption somewhere, which has finally been resolved. This is one for the strange case file, as any time I have seen a sound driver problem, the sound worked, or it did not. PERIOD. Not where it worked every time except for when ONE program, in this case, the SL Client, was running.
