Has anyone heard about or found the download for this according to wired http://www.wired.com/news/technology/software/0,72305-0.html?tw=rss.index the site they link to has the info but all I find is Lightroom not CS. Would love to see what CS would do for SL. Suppossedly it was opened early this AM but not even a peep on the website.

I didn't know there was a beta out yet, but I've heard some great things about CS3 (and not just Photoshop). Supposedly, Adobe is revamping the whole suite to make all the programs match Photoshop better, standardizing the menu layouts, the command names, stuff like that. All I have to say on that is it's about frickin' time.
As for the changes to Photoshop itself, I've heard they'll be focusing on adding a lot more lossless editing tools. I don't know many specifics. _____________________

"Non-destructive" editing might be a better term than "lossless". But yes a major new feature is the ability to turn images into smart objects, and then apply one or more filters in a non-destructive way. The filters can then be adjusted after the fact... you can add/remove filters at any time, re-order them so certain filters are applied before others, change each filter's blend mode, etc.
Before CS3 experimenting with multiple filters required endless apply / undo cycles. Another cool change is to the vanishing point system. Now you can model 3d surfaces to any angle (not just right-angles as before.) Also when you apply textures to these surfaces it will automatically & seamlessly "wrap" around corners/edges of the surface. There's also a new selection tool (called "Quick Select" that's way better than the "Magic Wand" tool for most uses. There are also improvements to the clone tool, allowing you to preview the clone source. Not so useful for me. For photographers there are tons of improvements to Camera Raw and also to the Bridge. For PC users it's an "incremental" upgrade over CS2... it's a bigger impact for Intel Mac users obviously since they're paying a big performance penalty now with CS2. -peekay |

"Non-destructive" editing might be a better term than "lossless". Good catch. Yes, that's what I meant. Oops. But yes a major new feature is the ability to turn images into smart objects, and then apply one or more filters in a non-destructive way. The filters can then be adjusted after the fact... you can add/remove filters at any time, re-order them so certain filters are applied before others, change each filter's blend mode, etc. Awesome. Before CS3 experimenting with multiple filters required endless apply / undo cycles. It's gonna be so great not to have to do that anymore. I can't wait. Another cool change is to the vanishing point system. Now you can model 3d surfaces to any angle (not just right-angles as before.) Also when you apply textures to these surfaces it will automatically & seamlessly "wrap" around corners/edges of the surface. Cool. I was hoping they'd do something like that. CS2's vanishing point tool is great, but what you're describing is something it's always needed. Good news. There's also a new selection tool (called "Quick Select" that's way better than the "Magic Wand" tool for most uses.Another "about frickin' time" thing. The magic wand is soooo useless. Glad to hear they're supplementing it, if not outright replacing it. There are also improvements to the clone tool, allowing you to preview the clone source. Not so useful for me. Hmm. Not sure what you mean by that. How does the previewing work. Does the brush end up looking like the source? If so, that could be quite handy. For photographers there are tons of improvements to Camera Raw and also to the Bridge. For PC users it's an "incremental" upgrade over CS2... it's a bigger impact for Intel Mac users obviously since they're paying a big performance penalty now with CS2. -peekay I'm not much of a photographer, and I'm somewhat allergic to apples, so these last two points don't do much for me. Thanks so much for the info, Peekay. _____________________

Basically you can select an "overlay" mode in the a clone source box. Then as you move around the brush, a semi-transparent copy of the source is overlaid on top of the brush, so you can see exactly which part of the source will be cloned to the new location, in real-time. There is also an option to "auto-hide" the overlay once you start painting the brush.
However (on the PC version anyway) the overlay mode is pretty buggy and somewhat confusing. For example, the overlay image sometimes gets "stuck" in position and becomes a part of the image (very bad) and the tool sometimes auto-hides even when that feature is not selected. I guess there's a reason it's still beta! For me, a welcome addition is the ability to select multiple clone sources (up to five) and the ability to toggle back & forth between them. Great if you're cloning several different parts of the image and want to go back and retouch them. -peekay |

Seems this is quickly becoming a vaporware issue. They've been saying "this week" for at two weeks now and ARE PLANNING A 2007 RELEASE FOR CS3! Might wanna keep eyes open to see the beta test info.
