Work-Around For the New Texture Picker Issue

I just posted this info as a reply to another thread, but I figured I should give it its own thread since it seems to be a popular subject. Hopefully this will help some people out.

Most every content creator has discovered by now that there is a major annoyance with the behavior of the texture picker in the latest version of SL. When you select an object (or surface) and then open the texture picker, it doesn't automatically find the texture by name in the inventory list. So far, it seems just about everybody has been dealing with this either by manually typing in the name, venting their frustrations on the forums, or both.

This bug is really annoying, but I've got some good news. There is a work-around. After you open the texture picker, deselect the prim (or surface) and then reselect it again. With any selection made after the picker is open, it will find the texture by name. With a selection made before the picker is open, it won't. So, just make sure to always make a selection AFTER you open the picker and everything will be fine.

I was up pretty late last night working on a project when I discovered this technique, and I used it the rest of the night with no problems. I just tested this morning as I'm writing this, and it still works. Happy texturing. :)

Unfortunately, there's also some bad news. I haven't been able to find a work-around for the same problem with the texture picker in appearance mode for avatar objects (clothing, skins, eyes, etc.). Since there's no way to deselect an avatar object, there's no way to make a new selection after the picker is open. If anyone can figure out a solution for this until LL actually fixes the problem, please post it here for the benefit of all. Thanks.

Hi, Chosen.

Ignore this and see below for reason: The texture picker problem for avatars can be dealt with by simply closing the erroneous texture picker window and then reclicking the texture window. The second time it comes up, the texture picker window picks the right texture, the one in use.

I had thought it was just me, until I read your note.

Chosen,

Excellent that you found a work around for the prim texture picker problem. I can only imagine how many poor creative prim builder souls are most grateful for that.

Govindira,
I was at first delighted to hear your possible solution to the texture picker problem in appearance mode & immediately logged back in world to test this BUT report sadly that it does not work for me, or others I have asked to try this method :(

This texture picker problem is most frustrating and I was heeding Luthien's advise earlier (see related post ) and trying to relay a bug report in SL .. got to type the last sentence about what the texture picker SHOULD do in "expected results" ... when .. guess what? SL crashed me! :/ ( sence very bad omen here )

My problem is a related one wherein the texture picker in Skin Tattoo layers in Appearance mode is NOT working since the upgrade on Wednesday last.

By clicking on the thumbnail image of the Tattoo layer texture in the Appearance Skin edit window should (like texture edit on prims) also locate immediately the corresponding texture in your inventory folders and display the exact name and location where the image is filed (obviously having full mod rights to the image or being the originator of the texture to do this )

Being a skinner by trade here in SL, this texture picker glitch is very seriously hampering my work at present as I'm smack bang in the middle of packing new female skins about to be released with more than 60 makeups per skin tone (a heck of a lotta skin files ) and I MUST use the texture picker in Skin Tattoos in order to put them all together! To accomplish this with the malfunctioning texture picker is certainly no joke.

I sincerely hope SL fix this bug really, really soon before I go stark raving mad... is there a Bellevue in SL ??

I just went in world to test it, and you're right, my technique no longer works. I don't know why I was lucky enough to have it work, but now, no longer.

I do skins, too, and I'm getting ready a small release. What I've been doing all along for my releases is opening the inventory window and dragging the textures from it onto the Appearance mode texture box. No preview, to be sure you have the one you want, but a post-view, anyway.

Is it just me, or is the work-around no longer working, after the update today?

Unstickied--thanx for the tip, and yes, this behavior has been fixed so it's back to the "classic" as people fondly remember it!

Yeah, Winter, the problem seems to be back. Even worse, the work around no longer works every time. SUCK!

strange this works for me, I seem to have no problem having it locate an in use texture (providing I have that texture) sometimes I have to do the minor work around, of select one face then the one I want it to find, but have not had it fail to find on first or second try.

am working on a house and doing my own textures and it doesn't seem to have a problem finding them...

yes, working as always for me, unless it's an older work and I no longer have the texture (thanks to inventory loss :P)
