I'm well used to seeing grey where the occasional texture takes its time to load. The thing is they usually get there in the end. I also know that, in drastic cases, emptying cache and doing a relog is probably the best fix for any file that doesn't to load properly whether they be textures or animations.

This morning I tried on a skin I made way back in the summer and found that the head is grey, which was odd because the same skin looked fine and dandy when I looked at it earlier last week.

I did a quick 'Ctrl+Alt+R' but that didn't help so I opened the 'Appearance' dialog and tried to reload the head texture under the 'Skin' tab. The box messaged 'Loading ...' but otherwise stayed grey. Then I emptied cache and relogged but that didn't help. I opened the texture files from 'Inventory' to check them and the upper body and leg textures are fine but the head texture is just a grey box.

Now this isn't an immediate disaster because I keep all my work files and I can upload that head texture again. Still, I was thinking of selling a few skins I made, including this one, and this isn't a good sign at all. If I had sold this particular skin already, the consumer would be having a similar issue with it today.

So just to be clear, is this a temporary problem that will right itself or has this texture been corrupted and somehow irretrievably lost?

Note: I'm using the latest viewer 1.23.5.136262 with an nVidia GeForce 9800 GT graphics card.

Don't worry, don't worry!

The texture eventually turned up after four and a half hours, which has got to be some kind of record even by the standards of the old system I had when I first started SL.

Gave me a very nasty start all the same.
