This may be the ONLY time I crave a Mac. Is there a Windows version of a 3D raw/terrain file editor of the same quality and freeness as Mac Backhoe? Thanks!

You are in luck my friend, there are a metric butt load of em out there. From little "class project" readers to industrial strength GIS apps that will interleave thousands of square miles of SDTS terrain data and overlays. I've never used Backhoe so I can't really compare and contrast for you.
Here is a good start point for you; it looks like this here blogger has used Backhoe and has some other recommendations: http://emmanowhere.blogspot.com/2007/03/when-i-first-terraformed-nowhere-sim-i.html |
