TGA
pro: more versatile
con: slightly more complex

PNG
pro: simpler
con: less versatile

winner: TGA

DDS
adoption status: DirectX texture format, thus unlikely

I find I can't use PNG files for skins/clothing -- the alpha mask isn't interpreted correctly and only TGA works. For normal objects, though, PNG works just fine, and has the added benefit that in Windows, the folder thumbnails work so it's easier to find what I'm looking for. I use PNG only for final results to be uploaded, not for works in progress, simply because I started working that way and it seems to be OK.

Another PNG con is that it is a compressed format, and this is a con for SL because the asset server must decompress it and then show it. That doesn't happen with TGA.

That is incorrect. I mean, you are correct that it is a compressed format, but it's not uploaded with PNG compression so it doesn't matter.

Another PNG con is that it is a compressed format, and this is a con for SL because the asset server must decompress it and then show it. That doesn't happen with TGA.

In addition to Osprey and Johan's corrections, it's also probably worth mentioning that the asset server is not what shows things. The "showing" is done by the viewer, on your local machine. All the asset server does is receive, store, and deliver files, just like any other file server on any other network.

Most of said files, by the way, do happen to be compressed, so they can stream as quickly as possible. All texture files, as Osprey mentioned, are stored in JPEG2000 format. When you view a texture in SL, the asset server simply sends the JPEG2000 file to your computer, and then your SL viewer opens the file for display. Decompression happens after delivery, not before, so the asset server is out of the loop at that point.

Also, just for clarification, so you know, when you upload a texture, you're not uploading your actual source file, whether it be TGA, PNG, or anything else. The instant you hit the Upload button, your SL client software makes a copy of the image in JPEG2000 format, and it is the copy that gets uploaded. Your source file never leaves your own hard drive.

Compression is done at the time of upload, by the viewer. Decompression is done at the time of display, also by the viewer. The asset server has nothing to do with either.

Ethan yer the best!!!!

Wow such a lil program, so easy to get and yet sooooooo great in it's use. I now never will upload the wrong tga and I will save so many L$ with that (yes I am stupid, yes I know the preview in uploading but bulkupload doesn't let you see that and I need that because I have sometimes big files to get into the grid )

So again Ethan this is great!!!!!!!

have fun
