Textures Needed

Hi all. I'm after some help.

I'm doing a build and I need some textures to complete it. I don't want to scam the webz for textures to rip because:
a) I don't have time, and,
b) I respect copyright.

I used SL in the past mainly for social stuff and having fun, but I need to do some builds without having to mess around with making/finding a load of textures.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good source of HQ textures in SL or otherwise that is not illegal and has a good range? Happy to pay appropriately for the right source.

Many thanks if you can help!

Hi Deunan. For future reference, a post like this should go in the "Products Wanted" section; the "Texturing Tips" forum is for questions by people who are building their own textures or have questions on how to use them.

That said, I buy textures inworld at the following stores, among others:

Textures R Us (TRU)
Lauren Fox Textures (lfox) (I use her express store, much quicker)
Pro Textures

My suggestion is you sign up to a photosharing site, buy a digital camera etc. Because the bulk of the textuire stores in SL are from Web rips anyway. There are those who make their own textures (TRU for one) but the bulk don't. creative commons is your friend.

Textures R Us (TRU) is a good place to start.

As far as the copyright thing...there are many sites out there with free public domain textures--you can find these as 'raw' textures, or 'tileable.'

Mayang is a good example--he has a ton of free raw textures in all variants--these are very high resolution, and are an excellent resource for custom texture creation. You have to learn how to work with textures though to use the raw versions, but this doesn't take too much time--it's worth knowing how to do it.

I realized you said you don't have enough time...custom creation isn't an option. I just wanted to make clear that it's not 'stealing' if you go to the right places. So that leaves TRU as a great resource for you to start. Also, if you have a digital camera, this is perfect because you can get your own textures, tailored shot to fit the project...but again, this takes time, which you don't have.

If you ever need custom work done, and you don't have time...hit me up inworld. I have a lot of experience in custom textures, and tiling setup.

Later.

Content creation forums are about learning how to make the stuff. Classifieds are for people selling/soliciting stuff. Silly you, indeed.

Yes silly me for chastising a less than welcoming response to someone's plea for assistance...and silly me for thinking SL forums were anything different than any other web forum or newsgroup in the non graphical internet I've been a part of for over 20yrs. A few users with a bit of knowledge who lurk the boards ready to pounce anyone less knowledgable than they are. Lighten up.......and give the same amount of patience you'd expect if you had difficulties. The guidelines in the forum headers are a generalization of what the posted topics should be about...they are not hard and fast rules as such and a little discretion should be used.

Less than welcoming? I answered the OP's question, giving her 3 stores for textures, and also gave her a recommendation on how she could get better answers in the future.

Deunan has 48 posts to her credit, so I don't see that a "welcome" was in order. Instead, I simply answered her question.

/me hands out chill pills all around.

Hi. x

Many thanks for all your responses - apologies for not replying sooner to this.

Also, apologies if I posted this in the incorrect place for answers to my question - but thank you for all the help anyway! I'll search the places that you recommend, and if I get stuck I shall ask you for some help Michael if you do not mind.

Kind regards,

Deu. x

GREAT TEXTURE DOWNLOADS - not in SL, but if you make clothes you need them out of world anyway...

www.renderosity.com - this site rocks! not only can you download free textures, photoshop brushes and the like but even the stuff for sale is cheap! If you make and sell clothes - some of the items here will save you a TON of time and you can more than make up the cost with a few sales of the item...

http://amazingtextures.com/textures/details.php?image_id=105
http://cgtextures.com/
http://www.textureking.com/index.php/category/fabirc/page/2
http://www.archivetextures.net/?category=209&page=91
http://www.thelimelite.net/html/textures1.shtml
http://textures.forrest.cz/
www.deviantart.com - be careful with this one, some artists want to be credited so if you use it make sure you know the rights etc...

also try www.turbosquid.com

Plus you can always make your own (but if you are squeezed for time I totally understand).

One of the things I do is take pictures of fabric swatches and make tiling patterns out of them - or even just use a really big picture of the fabric. If you do a google search for "3D tiling texture" or "3d texture map" or "photoshop pattern" you will have hundreds of results!

At my store in shona there is a free box full of hundreds of free textures that I have collected over the years in SL. It is on the East vendor wall.

These free textures that are already in world will save you the cost of uploading stuff off of the internet.

The link is broken...

Just look up the name on google or make sure you haven't added or removed something when you typed it.
Public domain or when the texture site says its free to use in their TOS is okay.
Some of those sites I have seen items for sale, some texture links people use here
in their TOS say no commercial, do not use in games but they are here.
I strongly suggest you read terms of use for anything you find on web or textures you buy here.
Also even if you download public domain texture you're going to have to have
basic understand or make lot of mistakes to know how to get the texture
to look right here.
Here in SL there is 90 percent chance the textures were stolen or taken off the web or from another texture maker.
I have growing dislike of most texture shops because of this.
Or they so many things its so hard to find exactly what you want.
Most of place that are good there is always some type of problem or I recognize them from other places.
Often I see things I could probably do myself.
I make my own because I have time. I am not good builder. I like making textures but there is few protections really for texture artist here.
The dcma and copyright enforcement here is a joke.
All LL does is require the people with take down notices to stop selling the textures
nothing more.
Sometimes I make things for uploads for others but I am not sure yet if I would
because it is so easily ripped off.
I don't make things to sell nor are majority of my textures available to public because
for obvious reasons.
