Greetings! Can anyone please explain me how to set the terrain texture settings, to get a sand beach around my island while the island itself is textured with grass? In the Region/Estate manager, tab "Ground Textures" it reads: the LOW value is the MAXIMUM heigth of Texture #1... the HIGH value is the MINIMUM height of Texture #4... These statements are not true in my case, and are driving me nuts. I have the following setup: Water at level 20m Island at level 22m Edges of island fade smoothly from 22m to 10m I put 21m in "Low", so there is sand underneath the water surface and on the edges of the island. I put ~25-30m in "High" for any mountains, which i don't have yet. When i apply these setting, i expect that anything <21m is textured with sand and anything above 21m and below 25-30m with grass. Anything higher should have a mountain texture. But in fact, sand covers huge parts of my island then and i can see grass below the water surface in some places... I played around with these settings a lot, but never got a satisfying result. I always have sand/grass and even mountain textures, where they shouldn't be at all. So obviously the tool does not work as i would expect it to do. But how does it work then? I'd really appreciate it, if anyone could help me out.. Regards, Speon

There seems to be a glitch in how it ois calculating the high limit. I found that I had to increase the values for both low and high limits, to getthe terrain textires to appear where I wanted them. For example, on a sim I am designing, the highest peaks are just unter 100M, and the 'high plains' are about 65 M. I wanted grass on the high plains, and snow above that... I should have been able to set the "High" limiter at 70 to 75, to get the snow to start partway up the slopes from the plains. Instead I had to push it to 95, and I still have a light scattering of snow on the plains... At the low end, I have sand as the lowest level, 20 M water plane, and beaches to 30 M or so, with patchy grass as the band between the sand and the grass of the high plains. As I recall, I had to put the low limit at 25 or so, which was about what I expected, to get the grass to start above the beaches, and not below the water. So, try pushing the high limit higher. That may fix it for you.

To make the terrain texture realistic, there is a strong element of 'randomness' which causes the textures to blend. The upper and lower bounds for textures 1 and 4 are not 'strict' limits. I agree with Ceera. Raise the altitude for Mountains. Or better.Since you don't HAVE any mountains, why not just use the SAND texture in boxes 2,3 and 4? Set the upper bound to 100. Then adjust the lower band between 10 and 21m to get the look you want. I'm sure you've seen this: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=097

Thank you for your replies. From: someone To make the terrain texture realistic, there is a strong element of 'randomness' which causes the textures to blend. The upper and lower bounds for textures 1 and 4 are not 'strict' limits. They ain't strict at all, but i expected them to stay around this limit +/- a very few meters. But when i say "19m" is "low" and my island is now 25-28m high, i do not expect to see any sand in the center of my island at all (except the beaches), which is the case. (Sorry LL, but the texture blending function is somewhat crappy. I wrote better ones before. *g*) From: someone I agree with Ceera. Raise the altitude for Mountains. Or better.Since you don't HAVE any mountains, why not just use the SAND texture in boxes 2,3 and 4? Set the upper bound to 100. Then adjust the lower band between 10 and 21m to get the look you want. Unfortunately, there's a single mountain i want to add later on. So it would come in handy not to skip the mountain texture. Anyway, i gave it a try. Same problem here. Either the grass covers the whole island, beaches too and you can see it underwater in some spaces too, or there is a lot of sand on the whole island, which is about 28m high by now. I used, among others, these values: Low: 5.0 High: 100.0 Maybe there's a problem with the shape of my terrain? As said, it's very flat with short beaches all around. The height difference between the center of my island and the waterline is about 8m at the moment, the island itself is flattened, only on the borders have a smooth falloff. I'm thinking about widening the beaches, so there is more space for the texture transitions, but not sure if this will do it. I'll give it a try anyway. Thank you again for your comments. regards, Speon
