Hi All...As I shop around and study other designer's clothing to learn...I have come across display clothing that is the acutal clothing. What I mean is I find dresses they are selling hanging from a hanger on a coat rack or the acutal tshirt folded up on a table. And all the person has to do is right click and buy.
So I was wanting to know if there is any information about making display clothing or a tutorial that i can follow? I see that this type of displaying is becoming quite popular and would love to learn it.

The ones I've seen are really a great selling point. It's just nice to see a clothing item that is not on some picture of some super avatar model. As far as I can tell the creator made a separate texture using the item as a guide to put up for display.......maybe hanging it on a hanger (a different upload). But, that can be a little decieving since you cannot get an idea of how it would look on an avatar. But the concept is great . I've also seen prim clothing displayed this way. That method might be more persuavive for me. The way that is done is sort of clear to me.......they make the clothing item and take into inventory. But instead of attaching and adjusting to fit their avatar they just drag the new item to the floor and place it for display. I would guess it's a copy they do that with since if they don't eventually atttach it to an avatar it can't be worn by anyone buying it. Haha..........wrong there. They can wear it.....on their hand

There could be way but it would require the person to pose in certain in the texture. A while back ago I made unwearable clothing display and sent it to friend. He sent back photo of him wearing the image to be funny. I have thought of doing something similar but I don't have means to do it.

They can wear it.....on their hand You can certainly rez the item directly to the ground and use it if you are displaying a single item of prim clothing like a skirt. If you're selling a complete outfit, or anything that contains clothing that is applied directly to the avatar rather than being a prim attachment, though, that won't work. What I do is to take a photo of myself wearing the outfit. Then, in Photoshop, I carefully erase everything in the photo except for the clothing. In a new layer, I draw a hanger, positioning it so that the clothing appears to hang naturally on it. I create an alpha channel so that the background of the composite image is transparent. When I upload it to SL, I apply the image to a nearly flattened cylindrical prim or a segment of a hollowed cylinder instead of a flat rectangle. That way, when I hang it on a rack or on a hook on the wall, it doesn't look quite so much like a hanging picture -- it has some 3-dimensionality to it. And, of course, the display then also serves as a box for the actual outfit I am selling. I have been trying to post a photo to show as an example, but don't seem to be having any luck with the forum's server this morning, so you'll have to imagine it.

Would think an easier way, for texture clothes, would be to just use Blender and then use the resulting texture with a modified AV (IE: No arms or legs) to make a hanger. Prim clothing is a lot more challenging as to get the shape and form you do need to wear it or place it on a Sculptie. I did try the Photograph route but any slight tran's in the texture made it a nightmare to clean up. I decided what you need is to take the picture against a totaly tran's, infinite background

That's a nice suggestion, Dingthat. I don't have access to Blender to try it out, but it sounds like it's worth looking into. Thank you.
For what it's worth, going the photo route really isn't much hassle. Photographing against a solid color background makes it fairly easy to trim away everything except the avatar. As you pointed out, though, the job would be more challenging if I were working with lace or other textures that make it impossible to mask out the avatar completely.
=== Side note: Is anyone else having trouble uploading an image to this forum? I've tried several formats on two machines today, and I keep getting an error message that says "There seems to have been a slight problem with the SL Forums database." ????

Not sure if you know Rolig but Blender is free. The interface is a nightmare to figure but for 'simple' tasks there are some decent tut's on it. I seem to recall one somewhere in this forum. Yes, I was referring to the issues of post-processing photo's with lace texture and tran's. Seems no matter what you set the thresholds at you still lose a lot of lace texture. Good Luck with Blender!

Blender might be free but not everyone can figure out how to use it. Blender isn't the easiest or very intuitive to learn how to use. I have tried few times in last ten years the most I have recently figured out is the exit button.
