I'm conducting a little test, so here's a challenge for all the cryptologists in the house. These 2 seemingly random "noise" images form a very recognizable image when combined a certain way. L$2000 goes to the first person that posts the decrypted image back to this thread. Photoshop is required to solve this. It doesn't matter what version. Here are 2 hints: 1. One of the GIF files needs to be converted to an image mode that supports layering so the images can be combined into one image with 2 layers. 2. The problem can be solved in 3 steps once the 2 images are layered in the same window.

Very close, but not quite. See if you can clear that up a bit

We have a winner! And that was fast. I'll pay you the next time I log in. Can you post the steps you took for all to see? An interesting thing to note - resizing the image dimensions to 1/8 does a nice job of restoring the grayscale to the image

Can you post the steps you took, for all to see? I did it so fast, I'm not sure and I closed the file already. Both files are layered in a stack, key1 is flipped vertically? and the exclusion filter is applied on the key1 layer I think. The first one I stupidly "cut" the white out of the top layer without even thinking of layer blending, duh! Keep the money though, it was fun. (Lucky for me I was eating lunch there were no other interesting threads.)

That's quite alright, it was worth it to me to see how fast it could be solved. This is actually a serious project. It sounds like you found one of several possible solutions. Exclusion and Difference both work similarly to combine images correctly, and Multiply and Linear Burn will produce the first image that you posted. I may post another similar (much harder!) challenge when I get around to it.

Ok I get how to combine these images to get the result, but how did you create the two images in the first place?

Wow! The dithering reminds me of classic Mac images. That's really cool, possibilities for stenography too... I wonder if you can do things like this inworld by layering two textures together and changing settings.

I've done something like this trick in RL, using sheets of polarising film to do the XOR operation.
