Try the stickys above. Chip midnights template and the SL clotheing previewer you need to download if you are serious. And if you have PS 7 update to 7.02. The alpha channel is bad in 7 and you will be needing alpha channels. Save everything in 256x256 or 512x512 tga.
Thanks for reading. _____________________

You might find it helpful to copy and mess around with the .tga files in the folder called character in your Second Life viewer installation. As I understand it, these are the files used to create the default SL avatar.

They are very good, but I have problems to understand how to create the skin itself. I could start by photo, but it is not easy to find the right pose that matches the templates. In addition, it is incredibly difficult to manage the border so that no separation line is visible on avatar's skin. I would like to find a basic example of male skin to start from. I would like to create an original skin for my avatar, but if I buy one in SL I just have a skin, not the TGA.... ![]() |

The best way to learn is to practice and experiment. You're not likely to find anyone willing to give you samples. What you're basically asking for is for someone else to have done most of the work for you. There's no shortcut to learning how to make good skins for SL. You have to be willing to put in the effort to both learn how to use the templates and to learn the ins and outs of your graphics program and how to paint skin or manipulate photos. If it makes you feel any better, everyone started out where you are now.
To avoid the seam issues you're having, extend the color at the edges beyond the template grid, at least the width of the edge matching guides (the multicolored stripe around the outer edges). That's known as the bleed area. Because of the way SL resolves texture progressively, you'll notice some nasty seams there before the texture is fully rezzed if you haven't extended your color out far enough. _____________________

If it makes you feel any better, everyone started out where you are now. Well, since I am planning to do something really different, just taking advantage of a basic skin would not be such an advantage. However it would help me where to place shadows and lights at least, especially on leg and arms. I understand that, but how can you extend a light, a strip, a drawing, across borders? Which is the right technique? I use PSP, but i suppose I can replicate any PS technique... Thank you in advance for any hints you may wish to share. |

Check out this thread and look for the RBG_Theta Photoshop plugin and normals maps that go with it. That should be a big help with generating shading. /109/eb/155651/1.html
