Hi there. I can't seem to figure out how to make a partly translucent texture.

Ummm.... Your example is missing, but the answer is that you need to use gray in the alpha channel image to color those parts that you want translucent. In the alpha channel, areas that are pure white will be interpreted in SL as opaque. Ones that are totally black will be transparent. It's a grayscale image. Choose intensity values anywhere between the extremes and you get translucency. The darker the gray, the more transparent your image will appear in SL.
To get a much better feel for this, see Robin Wood's excellent tutorial at http://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/SL-Tuts/SLTutSet.html |

Thanks. For some reason I am also having trouble posting! So rather than reduce the opacity of the layer, it sound like I select the layer pixels, then go over to the Alpha Channel and paint them gray. Des that sound right?

Essentially. Or if you want ALL of the visible areas in your texture to have the same level of transparency, you can simply work directly on the alpha channel image itself. Open it, select the white areas, and replace them with whatever gray you wish.
I suggest that you read the sticky on Transparency and alpha channels at the top of this forum before you go too much farther in this enterprise. You'll find many (most?) of your questions answered there. Good luck! ![]() |

easiest way to do it is to select the layer you want transparent and select the masking tool. Then just switch to your alpha layer and fill it with whatever shade of grey you require (Your masking outline should still be visible when you switch to the alpha channel).
When you have done all the layers you wish to be transparent just do the same process for the solid layers (filled with full white). You can achieve some very fancy layering doing this with different levels of transparency. |
