I've compiled a simple installer for sharing Windlight settings with the community, and for quickly installing them to your client. Currently, it is loaded with three of my most frequently used Windlight settings for skins, but I would like to add everyone elses favorite settings too! If anyone would like to share, send me your favorite Windlight setting(s) in *.xml format to...

namssor@secondskinlabs.com

I will include them in this installer. Authorship can be recognized if the file names are unique to the author's name (i.e. Chip%27s%20perfect%20skin1.xml).

Here's the link:

http://www.secondskinlabs.com/Downloads/downloads3.html

I will use this thread to let people know when the installer is updated.

What an awesome idea! You so rock Namsorr!

I'll upload a couple of my faves tonight. Just one stupid question: Where do i find my presets, and will they already be in XML format or will I need to do something to them?

Here is my preset Namssor, costed me lot of time figure it.

This presets turns ur SL to the old SL but keeping the WL skies and water. You see the textures like they should, this means like they look in photoshop, not ugly shadows not need of face lamps.

The only thing is that u need set up "moon and sun only" instead of "local lights" but once time u try this preset u forget forever the lights and other WL presets :P

http://rapidshare.com/files/120625586/FSOriginal.xml

If u wanna include and u can rename to Free Speerit preset better :P
Free to you.

And nice idea, I am waiting other people presets :)

Would be nice if the Lindens make an loader into the client and give you the option to load the settings by regions.

Thanks Desidelia! As soon as I collect a few more, I'll compile an update.

I hope LL will eventually build Windlight settings in as an asset or client fuctionality. Until then it's nice to have a place to share them easily.

Torley Linden also has an installer with a plethora of WL settings here (bottom of the page):

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Windlight

The install directory needs to be changed to...
C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app_settings\windlight
...to save the files correctly in the "skies" and "water" directories.

A while ago I was working on visual muting and it occurred to me that while I was working on rendering stuff I should also work on parcel-level settings for things like windlight, time of day and water level. Ideally these would be parcel-level settings, but not counting on Lindens agreeing I made them properties that could be read from a special object. Once you were in range of the object it'd transmit parameters and the viewer would apply those as long as you were on the same parcel as the object. You'd load these parameters by putting a notecard in the object.

Why water level? Imagine being able to create your own island, on the mainland at 700m. And another above it at 1300m. And another...and another... From your skybox at 3300m it'd look like you were on an island. Or you could turn your hillside flat into a lakeside condo. Your lower-altitude neighbors would be under water. Or you could build an under-water colony, anywhere you like.

This would destroy mainland continuity, so of course it won't be supported in the official viewer.

I've updated the installer with a few more 3rd party presets and changed the default install directory to:

C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app_settings\windlight

This allows for the simultanious installation of both sky and water presets. Download from:

http://www.secondskinlabs.com/Downloads/downloads3.html

If anyone has more WL presets they feel like sharing, please do!

Great idea Namssor! It'll be nice when we get the ability to share settings in the client, but why wait? Going to check 'em out now and help spread the word on my blog. Hope you can get many people to contribute their settings. :)

CB Redgrave has been kind enough to send me some more rouge themed XML sky presets to include with this installer. I just updated it. Check-m-out!

http://www.secondskinlabs.com/Downloads/downloads3.html

Side note:
As this file grows, preset names like "Sunset1","Aqua2", etc. may come up more than once in a list of many. It's best practice to include an avatar name, or at least avatar initials in the preset names when sending them to me. That makes duplicates less likely, and also makes it easier to keep track of authorship.

I look forward to getting them!

Some people on Macs are feeling a little left out, although Zip files get them halfway there. Does anyone know if I can write a Mac installer on a PC? I'm guessing I would need something which self extracts to a configurable full path that can be translated into a Mac compatible directory path (into packets). If not, maybe I'll just host a simple self extracting Zip file for Mac users.

For Whelan fans

I created another WL sky preset based on of the famous Robots of Dawn illustration by Michael Whelan. The sky shifts through intense hues linked to the xy cloud movements, and bathes the avatar in a warm glow. Try it out. It's been added to the installer.

I've added several more sky presets from Ana Lutetia and Bryn Oh.
