I am sorry if I am frustrating people, I know it may seem very simple to everyone, but I'm not sure what I'm doing. I read thru several informational books and such about making things using templates and downloading templates and things. I got a starter version of Photoshop to try and use as well as GIMP. I downloaded templates into each of these prgrams, because no one ever says download here or there so I figured it must go into these programs, yet when I open them I can not find any of the templates to use. I see template options in GIMP when I go to it it's not one of the listed, the templates I unzipped into there. Any help would be appreciated...Raspy

Hi Rasputina, I notice this only your second post, so welcome to SL :) Let me see if I can clear up a few things for you.

First, as far as where to download to, it's never a good idea to put data files directly into program folders. That was the practice back in the early 90's, the days of Windows 3.1, when there was very little chance that the file format of one program could be read by another, but it's just not the way things are done these days. If you're using Windows XP, here's what I'd recommend. Open up your My Pictures folder and create a new folder inside it. Rename the new folder "SL Templates" (without the quotation marks). Put the downloaded templates in that folder.

The templates will not be in a usable format right off the bat. The downloaded files will be in what's called zip format, which is basically a package that makes the files smaller for faster download. You'll need to unzip them. Download and install Winzip if you don't already have it. Then open up the My Pictures\SL Templates folder where you put the downloaded template files. Double click to open the zip files and follow the instructions to extract the contents to this folder.

Now open Photoshop, click on the word "File" at the top left of the screen, and then click "Open". By default, the Open File Dialog in Photoshop will look to the My Pictures folder if you havn't told it to look elsewhere. You should see the SL templates folder listed in My Pictures' contents. Double click it to open the folder, and you should see the templates listed.

Please don't be offended when I say this, but it sounds like you're new not only to Photoshop and GIMP, but to computers in general. I'd be hesitant to advise someone to tackle learning a complex program like Photoshop or GIMP who isn't yet comfortable with more basic tasks like downloading and opening files, or with where to put them. You might want to start with programs that are a little more intuitve first, like MS Word, just to get the hang of how the computer works. Otherwise you're struggling to learn graphical editing and basic computing at the same time, which I could see being a nightmare. Keep in mind that even people who have been using computers for 20 years or more typically have trouble understanding Photoshop and GIMP at first. I don't mean to discourage you in any way, but I'm a big believer in taking things one step at a time. If I'm wrong, and you're already computer savvy, then I guess I totally misunderstood your post, and for that I apologize, but if I interpreted correctly then I'd strongly suggest holding off on the graphics stuff for at least a while until you've got a firm grasp of how the computer itself works.

GNU Image Manipulation Program. It's much the same as Photoshop.

OK, I'm not good at describing it, so instead, I'll post this link to an on-line manual called Grokking the GIMP. I hope it helps, it's certainly helped me in the past. There's a link on the first page to buy a dead-tree version too, if you prefer reading that way.
