How do you get rid of that vertical line on the back of the neck?

You need to reduce the coverage of the mouth area. That slightly overlaps the back of the neck area on the default templates. Or you can bleed out the skin texture a bit and that will do the trick too

Not outside the bounds of the texture, just around the problem area on the back of the head.

Not sure what you mean. What I do is, I just make the mouth area smaller until it isn't interfering with the surrounding lines. I make the mouth area smaller by painting over it with the skin color. Try to be very clean about it. Are you using Chip Midnight's templates? 'Cause they're damn helpful :)

i filled the whole square with the same color of texture and painted all the other things on top - there's really nothing to bleed since all the face parts except for a few highlights are the same color- how small do i make the lips so they don't bleed to the neck?

Filling the entire area with a solid texture is not a good approach to skin design. You are really making more work for yourself by doing that. Lo is right. Go get yourself a good template to work from and pay close attention to the AV map and seem guides.

This is the area you need to make smaller.

See how the back of the head is right next to the teeth, mouth, and tongue?

All you need to do is shade in the sides with the skin color until the line doesn't show anymore. This can take a few tries and uploads. Hope that helps :)
