Partila transparency in the gimp

it's [rpbably been asked beforeand i searched but i couldnt find the answer sodoes anyone know how to make something partially transparent in the gimp as opposed ot fully transparent

Change the opacity of the layer, that's the easiest way.

Yes - in the layer dialog, select your layer and right click, then select "Add Layer Mask". When it asks, select "White - full opacity". A second thumbnail image will appear next to the original one in the layer dialog, all white. This is your layer mask.

Layer masks are monochromatic layers, with a color range from pure black to pure white. Pure white is 100% solid, pure black is 100% transparent. Sooo, it stands to reason that any shade of gray in between those two extremes will be some percentage of transparency, and that's exactly how it works.

You can use any painting tool to paint your transparency up or down by painting in this channel. Airbrushes work best, but you can do anything you like.

When you're done, select your main image layer again and save.
