Read the sticky topic at the start of the Texture Tips forum on how to use trasparency. You need to use alpha channels and save as 32-bit tga files, and not use the transparency setting for the whole prim.

You have to use alpha transparency.
To do this, u need to open a new file in gimp..say 500 x 500
Make sure the background is transparent/grey checkers.
Then, do what ever u were doing with text.
Now, click file/save as. then choose Targa .tga
if it asks to export click ignore, and then another window will pop up, and it will have 2
tabs, make sure to uncheck RLE compression. then walla..it works
