I'm curious if it's possible to make the avatar itself transparent? If this is not possible, then how does one make the avatar completely invisible so I can rebuild with transparent prims?

...or is this just beyond the capacity of SL? (For now)

There's invsi-prims for that. I could give you one, although they are quite common and free.

I've never tried it, but I will. I could use 90% transparent glass textures and run around nekkid I suppose. I'll see how it works out :D
