How does SL handle oddball sized textures?
If I have a texture that's 512x384 (or heck, 317x131) should I resample it to a standard size, or just leave it as is?
Thanks,
sw

What you can do is resample it to perhapse 512x256 and then figure out the aspect ratio for the texture stretching in SL. I don't think the information loss would be too bad with a conversion like that from 512x384, but you'd have to test it out that way versus just uploading it as is (384 is a binary multiple) . If it looks bad, then go the other direction (512x512).

So far I've just been uploading them as-is and they've worked fine -- I was just wondering if SL is secretly resizing them, or whether there are any advantages to doing it any particular way.

A thing I sometimes do to test is upload the texture, and then go to the File menu and "Save Texture As..." and compare the resulting .TGA to your original. This can be done for free, essentially, on the Preview Grid.

far as i know sl resizes textures when you upload them to fit the nearest 64, 128, 256, 512 etc. so your 317x131 will get resized to 256x128. it's probably better for quality if you do that yourself before you upload or just work in those sizes to begin with.

When I have oddball sizes, I usually end up increasing the canvas size (not the image size) to 256 or 512. That way you don't have to worry about your image losing quality from changing the aspect ratio (because SL won't need to resize it). When you apply it to your model, just decrease the repeats per face to eliminate the blank canvas space.
