Hi. I use photoshop rite now, but it is a free trial. I dont feel like paying for the program, so i was wondering if there is any program jsut like it that is free. Is there any painting programs out there that mimic Photoshop, but are free???

GIMP 2

There's even an SL GIMP2 usergroup I think :-)

I've used the GIMP, and I've used PSP8, and found that GIMP does a much better job with one particular feature that's especially important in SL: saving Alpha (transparent) images in TGA format. In PSP, it's a multi-step process that has to be repeated each time you export to TGA, and a royal PITA; in GIMP, you just "Save As", and that's all there is to it. The GIMP also displays alpha textures nicely, showing the image translucently against a two-tone grey checkerboard background, rather than (as PSP does) an ugly white "halo" to indicate the translucent section, against a black background.

That said, PSP's user interface is nicer, and it has a few features that either GIMP doesn't have, or that I haven't figured out yet.

If you plan to make clothing, or make building textures with transparent parts (e.g., windows, curtains), use GIMP; if you plan to just do image retouching, and are willing to pay a little money to make your learning curve a little easier, consider PSP.

Yes, there is a windows version... it's a little harder to find, but it's linked from www.gimp.org

I also use GIMP, and I actually prefer it to PS and PSP. It's free, it works, it's got some nice features that I find much easier to use than it's costly brethren's, (such as creating alpha textures) and lots of users have done nice patches and 'bells and whistles' that are also free to download.

I do get some program crashes from time to time, most often when using a couple of the Script-Fu functions, but I've learned to just skip over experimenting with those particular funtions and find that I don't miss them at all. I also haven't checked for patches for a while, so they may be fixed by now, I don't know.
