I have searched the forums but cannot find anything on whether a prim can be attached to clothing. I'm guessing is can based on the outfits and shoes I see. So more importantly, how does one do this? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Prims attach to your avatar, not your clothing. Clothing is simply a texture applied to your avatar. It can be confusing when people mention Prim clothing, like the mini skirts that some have been designing. All Prims can be applied to your avatar through the pie menu you call up by right clicking an object/Prim. You either choose Attach or Wear. Attach is better because you can choose the location you want the Prim to attach to, like the hip, or spine.

Yes, but...

Yes, I understand how to get prims to attach to an avatar. So does that mean and entire outfit has to be prims? What I wanted to do was attach a belt buckle to a pair of jeans. How do I get them to go on and off together? Not something that can be done?

As a practical matter, unless you're going for the big giant cowboy belt buckle, it's probably better to paint such a thing on the pants themselves.

But a belt buckle is easy enough; you must attach the buckle to "you", the avatar, but you can place it over the appopriate spot of your jeans. You can't automatically click one and have the other jump on, but if you have both parts as components of an outfit, all in a single folder, and drag that folder onto yourself you'll put it all on at the same time.

you will also note that the attached prim(s) will be affected by your movement, ie they might swing as the body part swings, or overlap with a body part. Experiment with various attachment points and animations/motions to get the behavior you want or as close to it as possible

Ahhh... put them in a folder. Thank you, I hadn't thought of that. I've put belt buckles on the pants themselves and they stretch a little oddly sometimes when the avatar moves. I guess there is something "wrong" with every method.

Thank you for the advice!

Shameless *bumpage* on my campaign to make some stuff part of a Design FAQ sticky. This is a helpful thread.

Putting them in the folder is the way to handle it, but, in my experience, that folder will replace everything you are wearing, whether there's a corresponding piece of clothing in there, or not.

So you might want to stick a copy of a shirt in there, or a pair of pants (if you're doing a jacket with a prim letter, for instance,) or any other clothing you consider essential, or you could have a "clothing accident."

(Good rule of thmub; try new clothing on in private first, especially if you're in a PG Sim. :p )
