To upload pictures to SL, click on the word "File" at the top of the screen, and then on the words "Upload image". Navigate to the file you want to upload, and click OK. It will cost you L$10 for each image.

SL will accept images in TGA, BMP, and JPEG formats. For best results, always use TGA, 24-bit if it doesn't need transparency, 32-bit if it does (see the Transparency Guide at the top of the forum for more info on that).

Canvas size must be measurable (in pixels) in powers of two on each side, with a maximum acceptable size of 1024x1024. If your source image is not sized to powers of two beforehand, SL will resize it at the time of upload, and the results aren't always pretty. Photoshop or any other good raster editor will always do a better job of resizing than SL will.

As for your four sections idea, I assume you mentioned that because you want to spread the image across 4 separate prim surfaces. I'd recommend uploading not four, but one single texture, and then using the repeat and offset settings on the editor window in SL to have each surface show just a quarter of the image. Pre-cutting the image into 4 smaller images will quadruple your upload cost, and will require four calls to the asset server every time someone views the images instead of just one.
